Weekly Reflection #9: Today, Michael Fenton talked about Desmos and what we should think about when we incorporate technology in the classroom. Reflect on the talk, the activities, and his philosophy of how we should incorporate tech in the classroom.

Before Michael Fenton speech, I had hear about something people say, that someday we will live in a world where almost everything will be done through technology and where there will be not a lot of human interaction. Nevertheless, I did not think that this “idea” in one way or another, it was already developing in places such as a school. I believe that after I saw the photos Michael Fenton showed us of how in some schools students are isolated from each other when they are interacting with

We all know those people that can not peel themselves from their technology, whether it’s the CEO of a major business or a teenage girl, they walk with their faces lit with the screaming brightness of a phone. In modern society, if a person is found on social media it is considered cool, while reading is not. Recent society has become caught up in the latest movies, fashion trends, and social media. Ray Bradbury wrote of this happening all the way back in the 1950s! He wrote science fiction where humans have become obsessed with technology, nowadays, that is called reality.…

We were once a communal species, hunting, gathering, and foraging for the benefit of ourselves and those around us. Although we moved away from a society formed on the mutual needs for survival we continue the practice of asking our neighbors for help when we are knees deep in a cookie recipe, stranded without eggs. However even this once commonplace practice of neighborly interaction is developing into a thing of the past, a mindset derived on mutual need has devolved into one centered solely on each individual. Our “We” mentality has been transfigured into a mindset precariously fixated on “me and mine”. As technology continues to develop, we dive deeper into the abyss of apathetic behavior, favoring a conversation through text than face to face human interaction, or liking a picture of a newborn on Facebook instead of holding that newborn in person.…

As technology continues to evolve in an accelerating fashion, humans have placed an intense focus on the future of our race. This has come in the forms of things like genetic mutation, self-driving cars, and forming a settlement on Mars. But the increase in technology has come with a decrease in quality human interaction, which is demonstrated by tendencies to find entertainment through screens rather than in another human being. The study of human interaction is a field that affects every person on this planet, and yet so many people have turned a blind eye to the distance that emerging technologies are forcing in between each other. In order to bring about true social realization and change, writers in this field need to focus on attracting…

The evolution of technology has brought many positives in today’s world, although when there is good, evil always follows it. Gary Colombo writes “Thinking Critically, Challenging Cultural Myths” and talks about how we connect to people with our beliefs and views, how college will give us obstacles and we will grow as individuals, and lastly, about our identities and how our culture can affect how we relate to others. Sherry Turkle “Growing up Tethered” says mostly negative things about technology and how we must be careful attending events or posting things about a certain topic that can destroy a relationship between two people because of having less privacy. Independence is not being taught to kids in today's world because of the connectivity…

William Howard Russell and Roger Fenton were among the first people to document wars in their respective area of expertise Russell was a journalist who communicated written war reports via telegraph back to Britain, while Fenton took photographs of the warzone, which were then sent back to Britain. The work of Roger Fenton can presented as realistic as his work was like a documentary because he was “telling it how it was” (source 4). This means that by using real pictures of real soldiers who were fighting in the Crimea, Fenton provided primary evidence to the British public. As it was primary evidence it had not been manipulated by others’ accounts or recollections and was an accurate representation of the war by this means, thereby defining…

I found it rather interesting how technologies have become “oxygen” in our lives and how it affected us in our day-to-day lives. Rachel Dretzin brought up a very interesting question in the beginning of the video and it hit me as well, it does seems like everyone is together in the same room but because of technologies, everyone lost the connection with the rest of the people but instead being dragged into the Internet world. I still remember talking to my parents about growing up with technologies, back in my parents’ time, they did not have that much access to the computers, they simply learned everything from school, teachers was the central figure in the classroom, the teachers were the transmitter and all the students was the…

Technology is an amazing thing. People are able to check email, video chat, broadcast live video, or order a pizza all from the their phone. The ability to make a phone call from a smartwatch was only something James Bond was able to do, but now anyone can purchase a smartwatch and be just like James Bond. The ability to ask for directions, a phone number, or even the weather forecast, is just the press of a button away. With the amount of tasks that be performed right from a person’s mobile phone, people are more connected today than ever before.…

College Life Technology is changing the world every second, especially in colleges, which is creating less and less social interaction. In Graeme Woods article “Is College Doomed” he explains the idea of Ben Nelson’s school called Minerva, and how it differs from a typical college. In Minerva, technology is the primary source for education, without technology Minerva would not exist; but with technology there does come problems, such as glitches. Having a college function by technology can not only fail because of the technical problems, but also cause students to become more secluded and diminish their social skills. Minerva is a University that is strictly all about a students education for their future careers in life, but college should…

In the short passage of The Medium is the Message by Marshall McLuhan, he explains his views on the transition from verbal communication to writing words down on a paper, and also the constant advancement of technology. McLuhan proposed that writing words on a paper led to inventions such as book, roads and more. At the same time, writing caused Western society to live in a world of invisible lines. He emphasized that alphabet had no true meaning until lines were added to it. Also that before writing the world had no restrictions.…

Alone Together, by Sherry Turkle, is a book that discusses the consequences of involving technology in our lives. In it, Turkle provides content that is enlightening and surprisingly simple. However, it is also unnecessarily repetitive, making it boring. The main ideas of the book are enlightening because they provide reason to many of the observations and social stigmas present today that were not thought to be easily explainable. For example, it is widely accepted that children growing up today are much more involved with technology.…
