Foundation Before Density In Scott McCloud’s graphic essay, “Show & Tell”, McCloud uses an appreciable combination of words and images interchangeably to convey clear and comprehensible thoughts, He establishes better, more understood, literature by depicting images directly alongside pieces of text. Evidently, pictures are an associative mechanism that enables newcomer and experienced readers to make visual connections to text they normally would not conclude to by only analyzing and interpreting words (McCloud). Moreover, aside from images allowing readers to make connections, illustrations are particularly crucial components in literary works because they can convey coherent messages all on their own. In all, visual depictions in literature…

Power and influence are presented on multiple levels throughout the movie Kicking and Screaming. Power, influence and ethics in leadership are all created and maintained through leaders in communication. This movie demonstrates how a leader must find a balance between all of these elements in order to gain the best results. Even though this movie is dramatized through comedy it shows how a leader can become carried away in certain situations and interactions.…

Manifestaciones (Manifestations) Manifestaciones or short for Mani is a leadership retreat hosted by the Center for Latino Arts and Culture (CLAC) located on College Avenue. Although it is expected that this retreat is only for Latinos since it is hosted by the CLAC, anyone from any race can go because although the retreat is Latino-oriented it is not Latino exclusive. There is an application that every potential participant must fill out and the participants are chosen based on their responses on the application. Because of limited space, not everyone is allowed to go but I was fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the participants.…

She produces and/or screen writes over 70 hours of television per season. Rhimes was born on January 13, 1970 (age 47) and lives with three of her daughters, two of which were adopted.…

Thank You For Arguing what Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson can Teach Us about The Art of Persuasion is an extremely well written book. It teaches the art of rhetoric, and Jay Heinrichs makes learning interesting by infusing lessons with current pop-culture which makes it highly relatable. In particular, I found Chapter 25, “Give a Persuasive Talk” to be both compelling and helpful. In essence, rhetoric forms the basis of an extremely important skill set that everyone should be given the opportunity to learn and benefit from. Heinrichs combines the art of rhetoric with modern culture to make lessons more appealing to young readers.…

On the first day of class, I felt pretty confident about my level of skills as a writer, but little did I know there were a lot of aspects in my writing that could be improved. As time progressed and we learned more about colloquial language and little things I could change in my essays to further advance and improve my writing. Now, I feel even more confident about my writing and know that all of these little changes I can make in my writing create a better flow of ideas and a higher level of formality. I feel that throughout this semester I have been greatly challenged as a writer and have advanced the most that I ever have in writing within such a short period of time. I have put in a lot time and effort into this class in order to create…

Bush’s speech comforted the devastated nation by telling us acts of heroism and by telling us that we were going to get the men who did it. He wanted to comfort the nation because we were all affected by the tragedy of September 11th. He knew that we were confused about who did this and why anyone would ever do this. He comforted us by saying that the world was with us, supporting us and that we would never forget our nation’s national anthem playing at places such as Buckingham Palace, the streets of Paris and Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate. Knowing that the world’s prayers and support was with us reminded us that the entire world felt for us in the face of this tragedy.…

This week’s therapy session went well. Erica showed me several ways to release stress when feeling anxious and I have already used them a few times since our meeting. We talked a lot about my body image issues and discussed where they may have stemmed from. After talking about my childhood and high school years we decided that my body image issues started around the age twelve and have gotten worse since I have started binging and purging. Erica asked me many times how I saw myself and this was hard to answer. It’s hard to explain to someone how it feels to look in the mirror and not recognize the person staring back at you.…

A lot can happen in just ten short weeks. I feel like I have grown from an amateur writer to a more advanced writer. But do not get me wrong, I know there is still much more room for improvement. The first half of the quarter was focused on the Rhetorical Analysis Essay and the second half was more geared towards the Rhetoric in Practice Project and Essay. At the time, I was just completing these assignments because they were mandatory, but looking back at the quarter I have noticed great improvements and growth not only as a student, but also as a writer.…

I started out my WRD 104 class without really knowing how I write. My process was not defined and was very inefficient. Though the course of this quarter I have accomplished goals that I set and have learned not only how to be a better writer but I have a deeper understanding and appreciation of my process of writing. One of the goals I set at the start of the quarter was to learn what writing process best suits me instead of sitting at my computer staring at it blankly and hoping something would come to me.…
