Weed and seed is a community- based program ran by the department of justice. The U.S. Department of Justice's Weed and Seed program was created for the purpose of demonstrating a resourceful approach to law enforcement and the community. The program, was initiated in 1991.(Casagrande, 2015) This program's primary goal is to prevent violent crime, gang activity and drug abuse in targeted high-crime neighborhoods all over the country. In order to accomplish these goals the weed and seed program follows a two stage strategy. Stage one involves the cooperation of both Police agencies as well as prosecutors in finding and exposing criminals who engage in violent crime and drug abuse. This is referred to as “weeding”.
