Personal Narrative Essay: Hard Labor Around The House

Improved Essays
On Sunday weekend my parents and I cleaned every spec of dust in the house. I thought it would be like my mothers usual tidy up session. We would mop the floors, wipe down the kitchen, and I’d sweep the porch. This time was different. I woke up to my mother hammering away with her fist on my door.
“Wake up Mylin! Its 8:30 and time to clean”, she said.
“Ugghh, Mom it’s a Sunday” I groaned.
As she walked away from the door I gave a sloth effort to get out of bed. I wondered why she had awakened me so early. Mom never cleans until after breakfast. We only get up this early for special occasions. I went from my room to my parents’ across the hall. I looked for my dad but I couldn’t find him. I supposed he wanted to get out of rubbing mom’s feet after a long morning clean. I made no mention of it to my mom. She could care less where my dad goes as long as she has someone to make up for his work. I am usually the person who does the most hard labor around the house anyways. My mother Julia Whinfield is a nurse at Children’s Hospital. This is also where she

He had only been home for two days and my parents were ready to spend more money on him. Today I woke up to find that my mom and Dad went out for lunch and left Morgan my car. Go figure. I chose to hangout with Tucker today. Tucker is my best friend from school. I called him Bones because he was super skinny. He had dark skin with brown eyes, and wore the hand me downs from his older brother Travis who is very close with Morgan. He had horrible eyesight and made up for it with the thick lenses in his glasses. His memory was shot from smoking so much pot, and his hearing seemed to get worst every day. Mom did not like Tuck because he always seemed to find trouble. I couldn’t blame her. It was his weed in my backpack Morgan had found, but I couldn’t snitch on my best friend. I was punished and he just bought more

A silence stretches long between us. Layna dabs at her eyes with the sleeve of her thin sweater, then reaches down and grasps my red-tipped fingers as we approach our mother’s house. Without a word, we step up onto the porch stairs that rasp in complaint, and I hold my breath, waiting for the curtains to swish, and the glimpse of Mom’s beaming face before she bustled towards the front door in her excitement to see us, throwing open the door to smother us in hugs, all wrinkled skin and senior sweat, and the scent of home.…

The crisp breeze rustled my hair as I walked out of my house on the fall September day with my dad drilling instructions into my head. It was my first Little League baseball game ever, and my dad wanted to make sure it wasn’t my last. Being seven years old and never touching a baseball was something that had scared me; a lot. I had no idea what to think about this foreign, petrifying, game could possibly be about. The car ride from my house was only a few minutes away from the fields where I would begin my baseball career.…

As soon as I sat I began bouncing on the cushion. For some unknown reason James decided to stay on the cold, unbreakable concrete. My mother stood next to me, only taller than me by a few inches. I contemplated making a joke about how small she was, like my father always did, but I figured I would wait for a better time to pull that joke out of my pocket. My mother then pulled me out of my thoughts by asking if James or I had any memories from the night before.…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

Many individuals would disagree or agree that children should not have to do chores. Jane Smiley wrote in her article, “The Case Against Chores,” that the pressure to put your children to work is unrelenting (Smiley 274). The Last Day Sweat was gleaming off my face as I finished lifting our couch into my mother’s van. It was a familiar action, we has always been moving around. We had held many houses for rent, each for one year at a time. We never stayed anywhere for long, presumably because nobody liked renting to single mothers with five kids. Growing Up in a Broken Home and What it Has Taught Me Growing up I had typical childhood experiences, but unlike some of you I grew up in a broken home. Many people would say I got the short end of the stick; however, I believe it has in some ways made me a better person.
