The love that Gatsby has towards Daisy provides for a very sweet and romantic gesture, but it is also nerve racking. This is due to Daisy being married to Tom. Gatsby does not see Tom as a threat though because he is able to throw elaborate parties for Daisy and show him how rich he his. In one encounter, he has Daisy over and shows her all of his expensive clothing. During this time he says to Tom, ““your wife never loved you...she’s never loved you...she loves me”” (130). Gatsby’s attitude towards Tom is very defensive because all he wants is his gem. His tone when he is talking to Tom is strong, but also scared at the same time because he is trying to stand up for himself and what he wants, but still wants to express to Daisy that she should marry him. Along with the way that Tom views Gatsby attitude towards him many people also show different attitudes towards Gatsby character. Readers notice the use of weather to represent the mood early on in the book when it is raining when Gatsby and Daisy are at tea together. Nick Carraway states that, “If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him,” The words “unbroken” and “success” tell the reader that Gatsby is something of perfection, or is at least this is the way he presents himself to be. Nick further compares Gatsby to the most pristine piece of technology of the 1920s, the seismograph. This further illustrates the mechanic perfectionism of Gatsby’s personality.
