Weasels Research Paper

Weasels are underrated in today’s society, never to be heard of. A weasel can’t fly without wings, but it can “ hitch a ride on the back of a woodpecker” (Bittel). A weasel doesn’t have opposable thumbs, yet it can use a stick to grab lunch. A weasel can’t capture its prey with telekinesis, yet it can set up a trap. A weasel can’t be the king of the jungle, yet it is wild. A weasel is wild. “Obedient to instinct, he bites his prey at the neck, either splitting the jugular vein at the throat or crunching the brain at the base of the skull, and he does not let go” (Dillard 1). As Dillard implied, weasels do what they want when they want, with no hesitation; this wildness goes even further with the strength of its features. “He examined the eagle and found the dry skull of a weasel fixed by the jaws to his throat” ( Dillard 2). We can live any way we want. People take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience--even of silence--by choice” (Dillard 16). This shows us how humans have free will, able to do what they want, just as weasels can. “The weasel lives in necessity and we live in choice, hating necessity and dying at the last ignobly in its talons. I would like to live as I should, as the weasel lives as he should” (Dillard 14). Weasels and humans don’t go through the same decision-making process, yet the human, as said by Dillard, states that they’d rather live by their own mindful way, just as weasels do; hence, the title: “Living Like Weasels.” All in all, we can examine and analyze the weasel’s wild and fierce behavior, making its straightforward decisions by necessity, yet, in the end, “Living Like Weasels,” is the notion of living the way chosen as weasels
