The topic I am discussing is wealth in America and how it relates to how students identify politically. The concepts I am looking is generally political wealth in America and how people of different economic brackets favor one political ideology over the other. I want to discover the multitude of factors that make people who have money, more conservative than those who do not. I want to look at why liberals who have money and don’t identify as conservative but as liberal instead. Since we are looking at the campus I wanted to see how this effected our campus. in this research paper is does a student at High Point Universities economic status effects how conservative they are or are not. Since the time I been interested in Politics …show more content…
This an important question to ask because each region of the United States has a differing ideas about what makes someone conservative or liberal. As I mentioned earlier that a southern may be conservative for social politics instead of a economic because they may value their social views more. This is important to look at to see how people identify that way. I also ask how their parents identify politically because that is one of the main factors for how their kid/High Point student will identify According to Gallup “(77% of future Republicans say their views are similar to their parents). But 25% of future Democrats and 28% of future independents tell Gallup they are more liberal than their parents.” (Gallup, 2017) . I also ask how the student identifies to see if they are different than their parents. Of course of one the most important questions is how much do their parents make. This is important to see if there is a direct relationship of how wealthy your parents are to how conservative the student …show more content…
I tried my best to give the survey to people that we’re alone and couldn’t be influenced by other people they were sitting with. I also had a friend pick out people that I would interview so I wouldn’t have a bias I didn’t even know about when handing the survey out. For my questions I had people circle the numbers next to the answers they chose. This made it easier for me to enter my variables in excel. For my questions about conservatism for example, the higher the number the more conservative you are, six is the most conservative. On the other hand questions like what region of the United States do you come from I had to do it differently in excel. In Excel I had to add extra more add more columns and show give each region a one underneath the column if the participate is from that region. I’m having a hard time explaining how it works in excel, but I understand

The phrase they were born with a golden or silver spoon has become the statement of rationalization when it comes to the rich. Haven’t you ever wished that you were born into a different family? Maybe a richer one? Well in the movie Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream the people living in the South Bronx know exactly what I’m referring to, especially since some of them live 10 minutes away from Park Avenue Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The South Bronx is known to be one of the poorest congressional districts in the United States and is notorious for the high poverty and unemployment rate in the city, contrary to Park Avenue which is known as the richest city (Gibney, 2012).…

As five candidates run for presidency, one candidate that is very intriguing and determined to fix our political structure is Bernard Sanders. In 1963, Bernie attended a march in Washington with Martin Luther King, Jr and John Lewis that was very symbolic to his career. His involvement with the civil rights movement was very inspirational because he demonstrated courageous acts of standing up for what was right even though it was politically unpopular. Candidates like Bernie is what our nation needs, he has very bold ideas in fixing our economical, scholar, and housing issues. One of the key issues that Bernie addresses is the economical inequality that is present in the United States.…

Growing up this quote by Malcom X sets the tone for my attitude towards education. “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” In today’s world, a higher education is the cornerstone of life. Regarding the debate of a liberal education over the years, I concur with Shorris and his points in “On the Uses of a Liberal Education as a Weapon in the Hands of the Restless Poor” and want to qualify with Edmundson’s points in “On the Uses of a Liberal Education as Lite Entertainment for Bored College Students”. Edmundson used to think that a liberal education was beneficial for everyone and was originally for self-betterment.…

The Gilded Age, from 1860s-1900s, is considered a time of economic growth, industrialization, and wealth. Slavery had ended after the Civil War, and factories and machines were replacing the farms. Like all things gilded, under the bright, shining facade of the Gilded Age, there were darker things hidden beneath. Greed, corruption, and poverty were prevalent everywhere, without having to look far to find it.…

During the 19th century, America was faced with the problem of poverty. Two of the groups experiencing poverty were immigrants and African Americans. When immigrants came over to America, most were unequipped with the skills necessary to adapt and become “American,” resulting in them living in their ethnic communities in the poorer areas and being unable to get out of poverty. On the other hand, African Americans faced poverty because of the effects of slavery and racial discrimination. Reformers and self-advocates attempted to help these two communities.…

The “American Dream” has been a central piece of ideology in American culture and history; the thought that any person, regardless of their background, could transcend their assigned socioeconomic class was among the most attractive reasons for coming to the new world. The transition from agrarianism (pre 1850) into industrialism (post 1850) changed the class structure from a relatively fixed one, making it easier for common workers to move their way up to the middle class. A more complex economy allowed them to take different career paths, and were rewarded based off merit rather than ownership. The same new economy allowed common workers to advocate for themselves where previously they could not. Although during these times there were several economic highs and lows, after the industrial revolution, intrinsic efforts from common workers to move into the middle class were more rewarded than they were previously.…

Greed is a concept conceived by man in his attempt to gain more power. Our Greed for power is the main reason we inhabit other lands. Man who thought they were superior, hence Nationalism, sought out to invade countries to gain control of their economic, society, culture, and basically everything the country had to offer (Simon). “By greed I mean the attempt of those who have plenty to get more, not the attempts for the rest of us to survive or lead a decent life. Look at the Walton’s of Wal-Mart fame, the four main heirs is equivalent to the bottom 40% of Americans” (Solnit).…

I currently live on a Christian seminary campus, where calling someone a liberal is considered an insult and anything less that extreme right wing is out of the norm. Though I’ve grown up around a very decided group of people, my parents are much more moderate than the majority of the people here and have definitely influenced my beliefs to a degree. It’s been an interesting contrast, being surrounded by one extreme and, as a millennial growing up in the age of the Internet, being influenced by the opposite end of the spectrum. I went into these quizzes thinking I would land somewhere in the middle and to the left, and I wasn’t too terribly far off.…

The article that most surprised me was “The Wealthiest Americans in Every State”. I felt this way because I never knew that so many rich people lived in America. I also was surprised that the richest person in America, Bill Gates who’s net worth is about $90 billion, lives in Washington. If I became rich then I would probably live in Hawaii or Florida or even stay in California. The 2ed wealthiest person Warren Buffett who’s net worth is $58.2 billion, he lives in Nebraska.…

In the United States, we have many different practices that are designed to redistribute wealth. These practices include educational grants and scholarships, food stamps, and federal housing. These practices are generally used in wealthier countries such as America, Canada, and parts of Europe. Practices that are used to redistribute wealth can help citizens who are struggling with their income and finances, those who are disabled or unable to work, and/or the elderly. These types of programs require the one in need of them to apply for them, if they do not apply for them then they will probably not get the assistance they need.…
