In the film Chinatown, Jack Nicholson plays private investigator J.J. Gittes trying to solve a series of mysterious related to the Cross and Mulwray families. Chinatown and particularly the role of the police serve as a social commentary about wealth and the role it plays in society. Noah Cross, played by John Huston, recieves no punishment for his numerous crimes and retains his high societal position. Although he has the money to pay his way out of any situation, his position of authority allows Noah to use brute force to get his way.
