Romeo + Juliet (1996) had quite a few strengths and weaknesses. I think the biggest strengths in the movie were the use of modern technology, the exaggerated storytelling, and the use of Olde English. The use of modern technology strengthened the movie because it made it easier to understand; when you’re watching something that includes objects you recognize, it helps to comprehend what’s going on. It’s a concept that is still evident in today’s society. Unconditional love is love without any limitations. Romeo and Juliet is exhibited this, as they loved each other even though their families were rivals and even though Romeo had been banished to the point where they literally died for each other. Another universal situation in the play is revenge. Revenge is the act of causing harm in return for a wrong. People try to get back at others all the time today, the same way they did back then. When Tybalt killed Mercutio, Romeo wanted revenge on Tybalt for killing his best friend, so he killed Tybalt. The third universal situation in Romeo and Juliet was the generation gap. Kids always think that their parents or anyone who’s older doesn’t or wouldn’t understand, the way Romeo and Juliet thought that of their parents. The role of fate is the last universal situation in Romeo and Juliet. Fate plays a huge role in Romeo and Juliet, from when Romeo instantly fell in love with Juliet and when Romeo misses Balthasar. Some things are just plain inevitable, and that will never change. There are so many things in Romeo and Juliet that are still relevant today, which is what makes the story so timeless.
