The ability to trust is a third strength I like to use to my advantage. In the Situational Leadership Theory, there are multiple styles. Daft (2014) states, “The fourth style, the entrusting style, provides little direction and little support because the leader turns over responsibility for decisions and their implementation to subordinates” (p. 17). I have found that when you show that you trust your more experienced subordinates, they appreciate and respect you more as a supervisor. This trust and respect relationship makes for a better work environment, and ultimately leads to faster production and better quality control throughout the life of a project. A third weakness of mine is assuming people know what I am talking about. This can get you into trouble while using a Situational Leadership style when you are communicating with less experienced subordinates. As communication relates to Situational Leadership, Daft (2014) states, “The directing style is a highly dictating style and involves giving explicit directions about how tasks should be accomplished” (p. 17). My last recommendation to increase the overall effectiveness of my leadership ability is to take the time to communicate and recommunicate with subordinates to ensure they share my vision. As Perna (2016) states, “Situational leadership is useful for educating the leader on how to grow and to communicate to their followers in important situations” (p. 4). Whether it is taking the time to communicate with new employees or somebody much more experienced, clear communication can make the difference between a successful project, and a project that fails.
