A great author once said ‘a good library will never be too neat or too dusty, because someone will always be in it, taking books off the shelves and staying up late reading them’. Does our library live up to this expectation? No. Why? Because of the lack of variety. The books in our library intended for our age are filled with the same boring, cliche magic and dragons. Books like We Were Liars should in the section for us. The characters, the plot, the themes and the life lessons of We Were Liars are what we should be reading. Racist, loving, selfish and caring are words that can describe the characters of We Were Liars, who are are three dimensional and realistic, the type of characters we should be reading. We Were Liars contains themes that are more appealing and relevant to our age, unlike the outdated books our library suggests. Foreignness is a major theme in We Were Liars. We are all frightened by the “Other”, the unknown force that brings change to our lives. How we cope with the unknown is what is important, which is shown in We Were Liars. The change here is Gat, a Native American friend of the Liars. Mind provoking themes like these are what should be included in books our library has. The final thing that makes We Were Liars suitable for our age range and our library is the life lessons it has. We Were Liars depicts how opulence and trust funds ruin families and brings out the worst in us. Throughout the book, the aunts, the cousins and the Liars fight for college funds and real estate, turning them from family to enemies. The book tells us that no matter what, we should not allow our possessions to posses us and shows the negative effects of wealth and power.
