Summary: The Influence Of Artificial Intelligence

Somewhere there is someone working in a lab to create a machine programmed with software that will be able to use logic, deductive reasoning and make ethical decisions. While there are many beneficial things we would be able to do with this type of technology, going on this endeavor could lead to a disastrous outcome if we aren’t careful. We should fear artificial intelligence because it will lead to mass unemployment, we may become too dependent on it, it is morally wrong, and it may eventually supersede us. With baby boomers modifying their work flexibility to make the transition into retirement smoother, there is an expected major shift in the workforce (O’Brien, 2014). As companies prepare for this transition, technology is one of the …show more content…
Whether it’s predicting what you are fixing to type, choosing shortest routes factoring in traffic, or navigating a flight on autopilot to its destination (Kelly, 2012). While it’s succeeding in making our lives easier and more manageable, it is also diminishing our abilities. The old adage goes if you don’t use it, you will lose it. Currently as it stands we rely too much on technology for things in our life. Ask a millennial what them or their significant others phone number is. An alarming amount of them will not know either. What has happened as technology advances is rather than learning information, we have been using this technology as an extension of our long term memory (Roberts, 2015). We trust the fact that we will have access to this wealth of knowledge like an online library at our fingertips (Roberts, 2015). So rather than take the time to digest and have deep critical thinking over things so that we can learn them fully and store them in our long term memory, we read an regurgitate them keeping in mind that if we need to access it in the future we have the ability to. Technology has created death of distance in this world. I can turn on a gaming system and play cooperatively with someone on the other side of the world. However, there is a reason why during these times the terms death of the newspaper, recorded music, and death of journalism have been coined. Technology makes the world a smaller …show more content…
I have read countless articles on why we should or shouldn’t be afraid of artificial intelligence, but I have yet to hear a definitive explanation on how we can control machines once they reach human level thinking. Will they farm us, keep us on a reserve, or discard us because of our inferiority? Truth is, while it is widely expected that we will eventually get to a place where machines have human intelligence, no one knows what to expect once that happens. James Barrat theorizes that the drive for self-preservation and resource acquisition may be inherent in all goal-driven systems of a certain degree of intelligence (Marcus, 2013). The only thing that would stand in the way of a machine deciding to take what it needs to survive or improve would be the values it was designed with. Not saying that machines are evil, but more so that they are currently programmed by humans who are flawed and always experience biases (Havens, 2013). Philosopher Nick Bostrom feels that having a control system in place for artificial intelligence is something we should figure out before we proceed with giving machines intelligence (Bostrom, 2003). Without clearly defined goals, it may well prove an uncomfortable future for humans, because artificial intelligence, while not inherently evil, will become the ultimate optimisation process (Wakefield,

Imagine if you had to go one day without any technology. Would you be able to remember phone numbers, your to-do list for the day, or addresses? Could you find a way to entertain yourself other than sending Snapchats to your friends or posting a picture of your lunch on Instagram? As children, we memorized math equations and birthdays, wrote addresses and phone numbers in a book, and used dictionaries to spell words that we didn’t know. Today, we have technology that does all of this for us.…

in 1942, author Isaac Asimov wrote a landmark science fiction book introducing three laws of robotics entitled “I, Robot.” These laws set the groundwork for a multitude of books, movies and other media including the modern movie “I, Robot” based loosely on one of Asimov’s short stories. The popularity of this sub culture highlights the curiosity of AI as we expand our technology. The recurring fear that something man made could overtake us has been one explored often and frequently, which is why Carr’s work comes as no surprise. Carr cites sociologist Daniel Bell when it comes to the use of the technologies we create: “as we use...the tools that extend our mental rather than our physical capacities — we inevitably begin to take on the qualities of those technologies.”…

A brilliant mind, Ben Goertzel, a Chief Scientist from Brazil, talks in this article about thinking machines and immortality, and how these interesting topics could affect the modern society where we live. He states: “The machines will invent new machines, prototype them, and build the factories, without involving humans” We are evolving to a new era, the age of technology and digitalization. An article from National Geographic states that artificial Intelligence is already integral part of human lives, and we may not be aware of it. This short article gives an idea:…

Humanity is having trouble with the prevalent rate of which technology is developing. It is remarkably rapid that it cannot be controlled by the human mind. Children are choosing robotic machines over regular biological individuals, which creates this bizarre experience between the human and the computer. As a society, we have yet to decide whether this development in the robotic machines is ethically concerning, or if we are able to control the path it takes. Sherry Turkle, author of “Alone Together,” believes we can control the pace and direction of technology.…

Is the media and internet slowly wearing away the knowledge that we had making us totally dependable on the objects put in front of us, or could computers and media be aiding us for the better? Nicholas Carr and Clive Thompson put these broad topics into perspective by forming different opinions going in different directions. One suggesting that the internet is making us smarter, developing our intellect and guiding us in the right direction to a more successful future? The other saying that we are losing our ability to think and learn on an efficient level as we use to.…

There is a battleline between good and evil that is never separated and this battleline runs through the hearts of mankind. Robots on the other hand, do not have emotions, a heart or feelings. Robots are just programmed and then commanded to do things that humans are too lazy to do or physically cannot do. A malfunction with these robots can turn into devastating consequences that can result into something as worse as the elimination of mankind.…

The way society thinks of Artificial Intelligence is absurd. Most people look at technological progress from a business perspective, namely, how can we profit from it. Some more pessimistic approaches may compare it to an uncontrollable snowball, where progress ultimately gets too fast and unstoppable. There are many ways to interpret the future of technology; however, Catherynne M. Valente proposes a new path for A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) that has not been explored yet.…

In a world where people get what they want, when wanted, seems impeccable. However, psychologically, The Harvard Study of Adult Development states, “That loneliness kills, and being social makes us happier, the quality of your relationships matter and relationships don't just protect our bodies, they protect our brains” (Waldinger). Proverbs 14:18 GNT “Ignorant people get what their foolishness deserves, but the clever are rewarded with knowledge” (“BibleGateway”). Mildred believes that complacency is better than knowledge, because she would rather be with her “family” which are the people in the parlor walls (Bradbury 69). Rather than reading books about people she can not see (Bradbury 69).…

In this they are fundamentally inhuman, and here is the relaxing thought : Computers will not take over the world; they cannot replace us, because they are not designed, as we are, for ambiguity.” (Thomas 427-78). Through this Thomas explains that because of our imperfection and ambiguities, it is not possible for the artificial intelligent, like computers, to take over the world. Also that these characteristics do bring unwanted fear into our minds, but these fears can be nullified due to our intellectual development. And with the help of Gavett’s article, this topic can be broaden even more, which brings a clear understanding of this topic.…

Now that super-human AI seems plausible, some of us have become worried about safety regarding the future AI development. They typically come in two forms. The first concern is that due to our inability to understanding the technical issues involved in complex systems, an AI system may end up exhibiting behavior or achieving a goal much different than what the designer purported. If the capabilities of this system are super-human in most aspects, it may end up unintentionally being dangerous to humans. The second and perhaps the most popular concern is that even if the AI system does not derail from its purported goal and behavior, there remains the possibility that the designer may himself provide AI systems such goals that are potentially conflicting with the goals of some of us.…
