Although Hanging Fire and We real cool are very divergent poems, their messages are homogeneous. Hanging Fire is about a fourteen year old girl who cares about what everyone thinks and wants to be cool but she has to face all of her fears alone as she repeatedly says “and momma’s in the bedroom with the door closed.” (Audre Lorde 897). On the other hand “We real cool” is about seven teenagers playing hooky in the middle of the day and they think they are cool. Everyone knows how teenagers can be, their self-image tis one of the most important things to him or her.…

The poem sums up the reality that many adolescences faced at that time whether they chose to drop out of school. Within this era in American history the case of Brown v. Board of Education, in 1954, the Supreme Court legislated that it was unconstitutional to segregate schools based on race; nevertheless, integration was sluggish and many African Americans became discouraged and began to drop out of school.…

“We die soon” is We Real Cool’s most important line because it is saying that our lives are not long enough to do everything we want, but to take risks and enjoy life. The significance of the poem is that life is short so you should enjoy it as much as you can. I came to this conclusion at first by just looking at the poem, you can obviously tell that this is a short poem just like life. Throughout the poem I picture a group of teens playing pool at night and just enjoying themselves without a risk in the world.…

The counterculture would not see the poem in this way at all. These seven are people who, as “Gary Smith says, live ‘in defiance of moral and social conformity and their own fate.’ And it is the act of defiance that gives members of the counterculture their sense of identity” (Sarnowski). What the dominant culture says not to do, the counterculture will do in order to be different from the dominant culture. When the seven say “We real cool” at the beginning of the poem, they are trying to show that their identity is separate from the dominant and uncool culture.…

    Identity In We Real Cool

In the poem, “We Real Cool” the author portrays the themes of identity and reckless abandonment in a simplistic writing form. In the first line the author writes “we real cool”, which helps to form the theme of identity. Identity is defined as “the fact of being who or what a person or thing is”, and by using the personal pronoun “we” the speaker is showing that they identify with this said group. This is significant because one can surround themselves with a group of individuals, however this does not mean that they identify with that social group. It can be inferred by this poem that the pool players see themselves as one, rather than seeing themselves as individual pool players inside of a group.…

American identity has long been theorized, and even, institutionalized through a complex system of othering, which pits the United States, its citizens, and their proposed unified beliefs, values, and practices against that which is assumed to be different. This has resulted in an American identity, which, while touting its diversity, excludes the “foreign” or “other” identities which are proposed to contrast traditional American characteristics. This incongruity is pervasive in American society, but a compelling contemporary example, which is largely rendered invisible due to its progressive and egalitarian intentions, is that of the Shephard Fairey’s “We the People” poster series, specifically the poster that depicts a Muslim woman in an…

“America” by Claude McKay puts a magnifying glass over the black population of America during the time of the 1920s—the time of the Harlem Renaissance, where black creativity was hailed and lauded by all who were lucky enough to come into contact with it. This was a time of musical ingenuity, artistic prowess, and literary mastery, all which stemmed from America’s most beaten down population. It was a time in which black Americans, Caribbean and African alike, collectively stood together to tell their country that they were still there. In the first two lines, the reader gets a sense that America, personified as female is not a warm, nurturing being as ??? expected of most women.…
