One doesn’t believe in dieting while the other works to make better food choices, one makes a conscious effort to exercise while the other just physically keeps busy on the other hand both are hindered from participating in certain life activities because of their chronic conditions. Jim doesn’t watch or think about what he eats. “I eat what I want!” Jim responded adamantly when I asked him if he tries to eat a more healthy diet. By Jim’s body language at this point in the interview I concluded this subject I realized at this moment that Jim’s body was tensing up and then he repositioned himself in his chair signaling to me this subject was closed so I just moved on to the next question without skipping a beat. Jim does have a daily exercise routine of push-ups, sit-ups and lifting weights yet the only cardio type of exercise he gets is walking around the car lot every day. This daily routine gives him a lot of steps but as his pulmonary doctor put it “doesn’t count as cardio…you need 15 to 20 minutes of brisk walking a day in order for it to count as cardio exercise,” to which Jim responds while shrugging his shoulders “oh well it’s what I do.” I asked Jim “Do you smoke?” He quickly answered “No” but something in the way he answered prompted me to ask “former smoker?” to which he nodded “yes”. When you are healthier your viewpoint on life tends to be more content, you make more plans and look to the future with possibility but if your health is not good then your viewpoint on life tends to be grave, you become lonely, isolated and you find yourself only thinking about the present and wondering when death will come. This example defines both Larry and Jim. Larry has a great outlook on life and would like to enjoy it for many more years to come while Jim’s outlook is meek and he isn’t planning on being here more than a year or two. It also helps to take a more active role in your health by being proactive when it comes to diet, exercise, working with your doctor as well as being your own advocate and conducting your own research. Life is short and where you might not have a say in your genetics how you live your life will greatly change how much those genetics will impact it. During the interview process I found it difficult to take listen to the interviewee, take notes and keep an eye on body language. I’m not sure why this was, maybe because I haven’t conducted too many interviews in this way. I’m not very good with small talk which helps with interviewing people, it has never been my forte but sure that with practice the ability to conduct interviews in a more productive way will
