In the column “We Have Nothing Left to Hold Us Together,” American columnist, Ben Shapiro, argues against athletes protesting the national anthem. He contends that the anthem symbolizes proud American ideals and unity, and that protesting it undermines the rights Americans hold and the ideologies they stand for. Shapiro’s claim that the anthem is a symbol for an ideal America, and the act of kneeling during, especially by privileged football players, only divides America is incorrect. Even though Shapiro states that love of country does not require love of all aspects of America, he says it means understanding what it was founded on. He claims that our founding fathers founded America on “a uniquely good basis.” While the ten commandments …show more content…
Shapiro goes on to say the flag stands for a good basis and “Not ethnic superiority or racial solidarity...but the notion of individual liberty and equal rights before God.” While America did promise more equality, that equality did not yet apply to everyone. Slaves had not yet been granted freedom or equal rights. This fact illustrates that American founders may have tried to create the best America they could, but to say the basis was good, is a bit of a stretch. Even with a disregard of his opinion about America’s founding, Shapiro misses that point on the true meaning of protesting the national anthem. He includes a quote from quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who he calls a “has-been”, where Kaepernick states his refusal to show pride in a country that oppresses minorities. After this statement, Shapiro says, “explained the man earning an average of $19,000,000 per year for sitting on the bench.” His addition of Kaepernick’s salary and activity on the field shows his misunderstanding of the protests. Kaepernick is merely utilizing the platform he has been given to peacefully stand up for the communities and groups who struggle to thrive in our society. Although Kaepernick may be wealthy, he is more than likely profoundly aware of the hardships

That is why some veterans take their own stand and kneel during the national anthem, because they know what it truly means to be brave. According to the article “Bend the knee: Whether you agree it or not, the protest is an act of patriotism” by Stan Grant from ABC news, it states, “Yet, some veterans have said that they fought precisely for the democratic freedoms - the right to protest - that all Americans, the athletes included, should enjoy. Indeed, protest lies at the very heart of the American nation.” This explains that even many veterans are saying that it is okay to protest if it is for the greater good of our nation. This disproves the argument that the opposing side claims because when we are protesting, we are not doing it to disrespect all the people who have lived and fought for our country before us, but we are doing it because these veterans that we are talking about fought for our freedom.…

The flag of The United States of America is a symbol that represents more than just a flag, it represents our country. White signifies purity and innocence, red signifies hardiness and valour, and blue signifies the color of the Chief. All of these colors represent our great nation, and our job is to respect that flag no matter the circumstances. I will never again stand for our nation’s national anthem; in fact, I vow to always speak out against racial injustice even when it is not popular to do so. I vow to never again follow a custom or tradition for the sake of patriotism. Colin Kaepernick makes me realize that true patriotism is not about symbols and customs, it is about how we treat each other as human beings. If a person is not disgusted and outraged by the many racial disparities faced by people of color in this country, yet proclaim to be outraged and disgusted by any form of protest, they are simply…

Last NFL season Colin Kaepernick decided to protest racial injustice by taking a knee during the national anthem before his games. This local movement quickly sparked discussion within conservative media who quickly pounced on the story, “ignoring Kaepernick’s stated intentions and instead accused him of being unpatriotic and disrespectful of the American flag” (citation). However, this wasn’t what brought Kaepernick to news headlines. The controversy exploded when President Donald Trump responded to the situation by saying, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners ... say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. He’s fired!’…

President Donald Trump believes the National Football League (NFL) is “disrespecting our great country” by refusing to stand for the National Anthem and wants to force players to stand. Even though Roger Goodell, the Commissioner of the NFL, believes the players should stand, he will not force his beliefs on the players. President Trump’s argument is invalid because it is an appeal to the respect Americans have for our military authority. This example of appeal to authority has many risks, because this fallacy conveys that if a figure of authority states something, it must be true. However, Trump is accusing the players of protesting against our country, while they are really protesting police brutality.…

I don’t think that the National Anthem is racist because the significance of this song is meant to represent the freedom we have in the United States of America and not many people know the true meaning behind this song. Many people dislike this song because they see it as discriminating African Americans who were slaves, but this is not necessarily true. The real point of the National Anthem is to show that America was built on the backs of slaves and that thanks to them, today we are able to have many rights. To bolster my ideas the article “Star Spangled Banner’ critics miss the point” by the author Mark Claque it states that the 4th verse of this song talked about both white and people of color. So no one was discriminated instead the songs purpose was to honor all people who have fought for our…

In the essay, “Why Colin Kaepernick and I Decided to Take a Knee,” Eric Reid attempts to justify the NFL’s disrespectful decision to kneel during the national anthem based off of police brutality but there are many logical fallacies in his argument and very little evidence to support his absurd claims. The idea that kneeling during the national anthem will stop police men from shooting unarmed black people is an oversimplification. The flag represents hard work, dedication, blood, sweat, tears and the struggle our ancestors had to suffer through in order to have all the freedoms we enjoy every single day. It’s a reminder to the military families who have lost loved ones that we still remember and recognize their sacrifice.…
