In the novel “We Have Always Lived in the Castle” written by Shirley Jackson the characters are divided into two social classes, including the upper class and the middle class . The divide between the classes may be seen in the different descriptions of characters by Merricat, such as Stella, Constance, and Merricat herself. Stella is described as “the only one who managed to keep hold of any color at all. She was round and pink and when she put on a bright print dress it stayed looking bright for a little while before it merged into the dirty grey of the rest” (Jackson ?). This description reveals the normal dull and dirty clothing that is often worn by the town’s people, the middle class. No matter how nice the towns people may dress
