I have been volunteering with the Spina Bifida Association of Alabama (SBA) for five years. I first decided to begin working with this association because working with children who have disabilities has always held a special place in my heart. Working with the SBA has helped me make a difference in my community and bring awareness to the disease of Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida victims have many limitations. The disease causes problems with their walking skills and most victims become confined to a wheel chair early in life.…

Communication is of essential importance in any workplace, relationship, and gathering, which creates efficient leadership within a group. Towards the closing of my junior year, I was elected to be one of the few student board members to my school’s National Honor Society. Achieving board member status for this renowned society of students is an eye-opening experience. Adapting to the responsibility that a highly respected board member carries of such a prestigious group truly distinguishes differences between the ordinary member and those who collectively lead the organization. From coordinating induction ceremonies for incoming members, to communicating with local providers for community service events, being a representative of…

When volunteering at West Minnehaha it made me realize things that I didn’t pay attention to before going in. The point was to build relationships, problem solve, what to do in a conflict situation, and step outside of my comfort zone. I learned how to do every single one of those things. I realized that the kids are in need of someone who they can look up to and a dependable person who they can count on. For example, I was looking after a few kids that were doing homework and when walking around I hear a conversation of two kids.…
