The Pros And Cons Of Americanization

Why some cultures are being Americanized? Some people may think that American culture is forcing itself on their cultures or local cultures. The truth is, these cultures are allowing Americanization to take place in their countries because they want to, and they are accepting this idea. For example, in Kuwait people started to wear jeans since the seventies and in every year there is a new jeans style. My mother once told me that when she and her friends started to wear jeans they had the “Flare” style and it was the fashion at that time. In every year the style changes and sometimes it goes all round to the old styles until today the fashion is the “Skinny” jeans or “Super Skinny”; this fashion trend started when people traveled to the USA …show more content…
Also few writers are worried that the world will be homogenized by American culture. In “All Things Asian Are Becoming Us”, Andrew Lam argues that the world is not being Americanized but going through what is called Asianization, which means that Asian cultures are rising and their voice is being heard around the world; while Americanization is taking a break. Moreover, in “Globalization”, Anthony Giddens talked about the meaning of globalization and how it effects on nation-states, economics and the institution. In “The Rise of the Rest”, Fareed Zakaria claims that the United State succeeds to globalize the world and benefitted from this idea. American culture is affecting and changing the entire world by technology, education and …show more content…
United States is known for its freedom and democracy which is something missing in some countries. This freedom is connected with clothes or the way people dress and the freedom of speech. A lot of people think that Americanization has a negative impact on their local culture. For instance, in Saudi Arabia they don’t have that much freedom so mostly they choose to study in the United States to seek the freedom they need and to breath. Except those people when they come back to their home country, they start asking for more; they ask for the freedom of speech and no one can stop them which can cause problems. Another example of the bad effect of Americanization, in Kuwait girls and boys dress like Americans, with the skirts, shirts, jeans, dresses and suits and trying to imitate them in everything considering this as modernization. I’m not saying that they can’t dress like them, but the bad side is when they show a lot of their body parts or wear something that is too stretch which can be against the culture. Zakaria provides a good example showing how we live in a scary time “We are told that we live in dark, dangerous times” (Zakaria 199). According to Zakaria, the way people change in a fast way is scary and we should be aware of what is changing. This might be the reason why most people think negatively about Americanization; they keep listening to old stories that makes them stand for their

In order to fix views throughout the world, the country has to manage the anti-American sentiment within its own borders. Appealing to other countries and raising favorability will be extremely difficult for a country where people view some of their fellow citizens as part of “a totally foreign culture” and will not accept change (“Background” para 3). In addition, America needs to attempt to cut down on involvement in conflict. In the Middle East and Afghanistan, favorability is exceptionally low in several countries (“Global View” 4-5). Terrorism is also a big global issue.…

Globalization a modern day way to describe the process in which different cultures are able to interact and learn from one another, through different ideas, items and people. Thomas Loren Friedman, three time Pulitzer Prize winner, and current writer for the New York Times foreign affairs column since 1995, is a famous journalist who took a closer look into Globalization. I believe that what Dr. Hsu is saying is that American culture is all about how you can make yourself stand out from everyone else so you can gain popularity, and fame. Americans are worried about finding a way to obtain more wealth, more materialistic things and more beauty. Our TV shows glamorize programs that show fat Americans stuffing their faces with as much food as possible, while some children go to school hungry, or TV shows that are about rich over privileged families’ crazy antics who are only famous because they meet America’s fickle idea of a beauty this fashion season. Instead of striving to tackle the issues of hunger in America, or lack of adequate housing, or literacy in America, young people today tweet about how Starbucks…

America and Korea: Cultural Difference Based on the Six Dimensions of Culture Leadership is unique to all organizations. In Geert Hofstede’s research he studies different nations and how their cultures affect their work place. It is an interesting concept to see how different countries relate to the employment environment. Hofstede himself describes culture as “the collective programming of the mind distinguishing the members of one group or category of people from others.” I have been to Korea and as different as we look we have a lot of similarities from an outside perspective.…

Cultural appropriation has been defined by Susan Scafidi as, “taking intellectual property, traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, or artifacts from someone else's culture without permission. This can include unauthorized use of another culture's dance, dress, music, language, folklore, cuisine, traditional medicine, religious symbols, etc.” In an article written by Brittany Enoghayin, she talks on the recent trend on African print clothing that has become conspicuous in prom attire. Brittany Enoghayin, author of Are Black Americans Culturally Appropriating Africans? , she reiterates how “some argue that Black Americans are appropriating African culture by suddenly adopting African themed clothing like a fly by night trend with little…

To me, being an American means that I am not forced into doing anything I don't want to do, like being forced to work in horrible conditions like they make kids do in other countries. Also, I am free, like free to choose how much money I make and how and where I would like to work (The American Dream). Here in the US, we have way more choices than other countries, like religion and jobs. Here we have the freedom of religion, we can practice just about any religion we want to like Christianity or Judaism. Also we can have any job we want to have like a business owner or an electrician.…

Mandelbaum believes that U.S foreign Policy has failed since the end of the cold war through different factors. Mandelbaum makes a strong case ideologically crusading into regime change, which invariably fails regardless of how virtuous the intent is. We first need to define what foreign policy and the cold war is in order to evaluate Mandelbaum and whether he thinks U.S. foreign policy has failed or not. He mentions that the years of 1991-2014 were very distinct from any previous period in American history and prior to this odd time period, the U.S foreign policy focused on the nation's security, rather than transforming other countries’ domestic arrangements. Foreign Policy or foreign affairs is explained as a government’s strategy in dealing with other nations to safeguard its national interests to achieve certain goals within its international relations(CITE).…

Globalization in this case does not just pertain to the last 20 years, or the last 100 years for that matter, but rather to the time when humans first started trading goods with another. This transferal of goods also came with syncretism of culture, transferring things such as religion, language, food, art, literature, etc across cultures. Linton hints at several examples of this in essay, including cotton domesticated in India, and eventually turned into cloth by methods derived form Southwestern Asia, leather shoes originating in Egypt, and cut from a pattern of Greek origin. These examples go to prove that ultimately finding a truly 100% American culture in today’s society is unattainable, due in part to the fact that globalization has always had and always will have a key factor in the culture of America.…
