The Unredeemed Captive is the factual telling of the Deerfield Massacre and the ways it effected the Williams family who lost their daughter as a captive to the Bear tribe of the Mohawk Native Americans. The book deeply explores religion and how it relates to the ideas of savagery and family through comparison of experiences in the lives of the Puritans and the lives of the Native American captors. The Deerfield Massacre occurred in 1704 in Massachusetts. The massacre was carried out by a tribe of Native Americans in retaliation against French and English attacks. The small town of Deerfield was raided and about 112 people were taken captive with 47 more being slain on the spot.…

What argument are the authors of “The Last Wilderness Preserve” and “A New Land of Opportunity” making about how human behavior and actions impact Antarctica? Which author do you feel presents the stronger argument and why? The author of “The Last Wilderness Preserve” talks about why humans are not meant to visit Antarctica. According to the text, “In 1959, leaders from twelve nations signed the Antarctic Treaty, which forbids extensive human activity in Antarctica.”…
On the very top of the poster is the phrase “The Return of the Great Adventure,” which indicates that this movie is a part of a sequel. Typically, when another movie is made that is part of a sequel, many people are interested in them. The author probably chose to include this phrase on the poster to get the viewer’s attention and interest them. The title of this movie is “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” This title is written in multi colors.…
It didn’t make it any better that I was beyond tired. Dragging my feet as I walked, eyes barely open, I was a living zombie. The sun burnt into my eyes worse than a death stare from a hungry gray wolf, in some spots it was like a harsh winter evening, and sometimes if you moved ten feet you would start to sweat a waterfall and would have to move back to the shade. It wasn’t a good day for my service project. Especially with the fact that it was at the end of the week, and I had just gotten off a bone chilling first guide in Fort Mackinac.…
Mallory Cattle catastrophes After a whole disastrous string of events containing many visits to the emergency room, an unrepaired broken tooth, life changing tragedy, and many legal issues that prevented me from staying at my own school, I journeyed to a new tiny school in the trash can of Los Angeles called Summit View West. Confused, overly optimistic, and determined to start a new, I did my best to start a new reputation; unlike my old one: “That Gay Awkward Weirdo”. Because I had Hung out with Jessica (The Nose Picker), Danni (The Sl**), Sarah (The Autistic Girl), and Bella (The Stalker), it didn’t help my situation.…
In Raiders of the Lost Ark by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman, we see how the story is an example of an Epic. We see how brave and wise Indiana Jones is when he figures out how to get out of situations and how he figures out different ancient articles. Even when he travels around the world like to South America and Nepal and also Cairo. Also how he has superhuman abilities such as punching people out of cars and sliding under cars without getting hurt. There also is a lot of supernatural things that happen in the movie such as spirits coming out of the ark and killing all the Nazi soldiers.…
A True Preserve Of Nature Most people would argue that the transcendental principles are too extreme to live by. However, the movie Into the Wild directed by Sean Penn, follows the true life story of Christopher McCandless. In the movie, McCandless graduates from Emory University with high honors, but soon after decides to leave his conventional lifestyle. McCandless travels to Alaska, intent to live in the solitude of nature, similar to how Thoreau traveled to Walden Pond. Unfortunately, McCandless eventually runs out of supplies and is discovered to have passed away.…
Everytime someone mentions mountains, I cannot help but to think about the trek up my first mountain. The first mountain I climbed, was Mount Fuji in Japan. Also known as Fujisan, this mountain stands at just over twelve-thousand feet. As the morning of the climb approached, my family and I got up early to go to the bus station.…
I lacked pants, boots, and frogs while still having a two-mile trek ahead of me. Small mounds grew on my legs while my jaw began to quiver rapidly and wildly as nature reminded me with a cool breath that I was was not naturally equipped for this situation. The energy to return home heated my body as I felt the embers of fortitude rekindling inside of me, this time resting heavily and heartily in my…
The chilly breeze grew stronger into gusts as I gradually made my way to the top of Copper Mountain on a midsummer day. It was afternoon when I finally reached the top of the humongous mountain. I hopped off the lift that had brought me all this way and I snatched my bike off the next chair coming by, scared I would miss it. My twin sister Abby, my older brother Dylan, my dad, and my Uncle Tim all came along on this adventure on the monstrous mountain.…
I remember before the trip we all got matching t-shirts. On the shirt, it had the map on it. I remember looking at the map and the track was only six inches long, and thinking this won’t be hard it’s not that long of a track; but boy was I wrong. I’ve never really been camping or even hiking before this. Everyone thought I was crazy for doing this trip…
When I was a little girl my mom never let me ride on a motorcycle. When I was an exchange student in Germany, everything changed. During my first three months there I had already tried new food, met new people, and started to learn a new language. I was feeling invincible from all these new experiences. I wanted to try everything possible during that year, because I wanted to keep this phenomenal feeling up.…
As we entered the park, we all were trying to decide what trail follow. Finally making a decision, everyone followed each other in pairs of twos. “Buzz!” blared my friend Tori’s phone. She hastily answered her phone while trying to balance on her bike at the same time. “Yes of course we will…
The phrase ‘public transportation’ most likely calls to mind images of obnoxious crowds, anxiety about being late, and a breeding ground for the next plague. Thinking of my daily commute on the DC metro calls to mind these images, but it also makes me think of a sacred space, a place for quiet reflection. These two different accounts of the same phenomena create a unique experience that can be further explained through phenomenological discourse through the descriptive critical method. This morning, I’m probably running late because of who I am as a person, and after anxiously checking the digital display every 30 seconds, finally getting on the trail will be a relief.…
