If more people knew what symptoms or signs to look for lives would be saved. Most people who commit suicide exhibit one or more warning signs, either through what they say or what they do. Conversations about killing themselves, having no reason to live, feeling trapped, or unbearable pain are indicators that a person may be thinking about suicide. Increasing or beginning the use of alcohol or drugs, researching a way to kill themselves, such as searching online for materials, acting recklessly, stopping activities, isolating from family and friends, sleeping too much or too little, visiting or calling people to say goodbye, and giving away possessions are also warning signs. People who are considering suicide often have mood changes Some examples of mood changes are depression, loss of interest, irritability, humiliation, and anxiety. About 20% of people who commit suicide have made a previous suicide attempt, and clinical studies have confirmed that those attempts increase a person’s risk for suicide death (CDC 2015).
