Walking past the magazine stand, a specific one pops out to me. On the cover is a beautiful blonde girl dressed in workout clothes and a sports bra. With one knee bent, her body is leaned forward, her chest up, butt out, showing the curves of her body. Instantly, I stopped to take a closer look, and asked myself, “Who is that gorgeous girl”? I was instantly intrigued and wanted to know more about the girl on this cover. Who is she? Why is she on the cover of golf magazine? Why don’t I recognize her? My guess is that many people had the same thoughts and reactions when they saw this magazine. I walked up and sat down to read what the magazine actually said. The reason is that she is not a professional golfer. Her name is Paulina Gretzky, daughter of the legendary hockey player Wayne Gretzky. She has no golf experience under her belt, and has never even hit a golf ball before. The closest connection she has to golf is that she is engaged to 6 time winner on the PGA Tour Dustin Johnson. Although she isn’t a golfer, this magazine was sold like wildfire. The reason, is because she is good looking. There is an old saying “sex sells”, and obviously, it still implies to us in the 21st century. These people are considered a mannequin, where conventional beauty is their only attribute. All “beautiful” women in advertisments, regardless of product or audience, conform to this norm. Paulina is used in what advertisers call a form of advertisement called canting. By displaying herself out there, she is bending her body out there, exemplifying her body parts (Beauty). Stacy Lewis, the world’s third ranked female golfer states that “Obviously, Golf Digest is trying to sell magazines, but at the same time you like to see a little respect for the women's game”. With someone who like Paulina Gretzky gracing the covers, it causes women golfers to be seen in a less significant way and are taken more as a joke. But this still appeals to readers because Golf Digest targets
