Before Wayne Gretzky joined the NHL, hockey was much less popular to play, and it was not a very entertaining sport to watch either. The first organized hockey game was played on March 3, 1875, between two teams of nine men each from Montreal’s Victoria Skating Club. Back then the “Skaters” had no thought of hitting each other. To that point, hockey had been a slow and calculated game, one that prioritized keeping possession of the puck.” (Hutson).
