WOOSTER — No matter the metric one uses, Wooster, Orrville and Wayne County continue to be a top performer when it comes to economic development among 18 counties in Northeast Ohio.
Wayne Economic Development Council President Rod Crider and Project Manager Shawn Starlin met with the Wayne County commissioners to talk about some of the latest projects and the key success metrics released by Team NEO/JobsOhio.
Wayne County was second in number of jobs created through the end of the third quarter this year with 633, trailing on Cuyahoga County’s 1,415. It was ahead of Summit (609), Lake (432), Mahoning (176), Stark (145) and others.
As for capital investment, Wayne County’s $90 million was second to only Trumbull County, where a new, $890 million gas-fired power plant is being constructed in Lordstown. The project is expected to create up to 500

“Wayne County is an economic powerhouse for our size,” Commissioner Scott Wiggam said. He was impressed with the performance of the county, particularly as it stacks up against Cuyahoga County, which is 11 times the population.
As for the number of projects counted as “wins” by JobsOhio, Wayne County had four. Cuyahoga County led with 18; Summit County netted 11; and Lake County had six. Portage County also had four.
Among the four wins here were the Cobblestone Hotel, LuK USA, P. Graham Dunn and a project not yet announced publicly, Crider said.
The Cobblestone Hotel will be a 54-bed, limited-service facility, and it will be located at 1720 N. Main St., Orrville. LuK USA’s latest project is $60 million expansion will feature a 90,000 square foot facility and create 250 jobs in the automotive industry. P. Graham Dunn is connecting two buildings it owns in Dalton. The company will create 25 new full-time jobs with a payroll of $883,000, and the equipment portion of the investment amounts to $1
