Waverly has a persistent and knowledge-hungry character. She is shown to be persistent after her meeting with Lau Po, seen in her narration " I lost many games and many Life Savers. But over the weeks, with each diminishing roll of candies, I added new secrets". If she was not persistent, she would have jut given up after losing so many games. She is shown to be hungry for knowledge after her brother does not explain why certain rules of chess are in play, and she goes to find out for herself. This is seen in the quote " I found out about all the whys later. I read the rules and looked up all the big words in a dictionary...
