Waukee High School Essay

What are some differences between Waukee and your home(weather, school, etc.)?
When I came to America the first thing I noticed was that everything was just a lot bigger than in Germany, like all the supermarkets, streets and the school. Also there were more people. My school in Germany has 1500 students from fifth to twelfth grade (the German school system works a little differently) and in Waukee there were 1500 students only from tenth to twelfth grade. Another thing I realised is that Americans are way more sociable than Germans. Many of you have like a huge driveway and front yard to hang out with neighbors. We don’t have that. Also strangers could just start talking to you and it was normal, but it is a weird thing to do here and I was pretty surprised when random people started talking to me about any

I learned to be more sociable and get involved into more extra curricular activities. Waukee also showed me how fun it is to show some team spirit! (We are not that cheerful in Germany :( )

What is the best memory?
I don’t think that there is just one best memory, because at the end I like to remember all things I did during my stay, even things that seemed boring to me like riding the bus. I guess I especially like memories of places where I met cool people.

What was your favorite part? My favorite part about my exchange year was meeting new people and getting to know the American way of life! I really enjoyed going to High School and liked all my classes and teachers. The classes at Waukee were funnier and you get to know your teachers! One of my favorite classes at Waukee was Theater Arts but at the end I really enjoyed all of them. I also enjoyed the Internationals Club I was part of and I think that it is great that people are so interested in other countries, which proves the stereotype that Americans only care about America wrong.

Each group of people have their set of beliefs, behaviors, and the way they do life that works best for them. Europe and North America have entirely different perspectives and behaviors that are incorporated into the culture for each of their geographic locations. Zooming in a little tighter in these areas, Germany and the United States each have their own unique set of values when it comes to, their social etiquette, self-policing, work/family balance, and even the way they engage in courtship to find a mate. The way the Germans and Americans have shaped the norms within their culture are a direct result of their values. These norms are just activities reflecting their opinion of how the “world should be, rather than the assumptions about the way the world really is.”…

In 1821, Boston English High School opened it’s doors and became the first public high school ever. When it first opened it had an enrollment of 101 boys and no female students. It was placed on the corner of Derne Street and Temple Street, in Boston Massachusetts. It was a school opened for boys who did not plan to attend Harvard or could not afford it. I think that this school opening played a key role in educational history because public schools today give all kinds of students the opportunity to learn just as this one did.…
