This week’s readings and lecture materials discuses about the lack of representation of people of color or race in children’s literature. It reinforces the lack of diversity in children’s literature. It is really disheartening that children’s literature is not reflecting the multicultural and diverse society. It is also sad that 37% of the population of the United States is made up of people of color, yet these category of population are only featured in 10% of children’s literature books. Representation of diverse population in children’s books serves as a very valuable tool for children as they learn more about themselves and other experiences of others as well. It serves as a “mirror” and “window” that prepares them as they learn very important life lessons which enables them to have a broaden horizon about the society and world around them. The main focalizer of the story is Kenny who is the middle child among his siblings Bryon and Joey. This story takes the readers through the journey of various life struggles and challenges of people of color during that critical period in time. This story is categorized as historical fiction because even though its characters are made up, the story is based on real life historic events which includes the 16th Street Baptist Church bombings that was carried out by antiracial group called the KKK which took the dear lives of innocent souls including children. The struggles of these people of color in this novel will serve both as a mirror and a window for its audiences since the real life events discussed in the book took place in U.S history.
