Watney's Time To Communicate With NASA In The 1979 Film Alien

Improved Essays
For thousands of years, the universe fascinated civilizations, allowing individuals to gaze longingly into the distant emptiness of space. However, centuries later, space travel has become a reality, and with that, society embraced the science fiction elements often found in movies today. In 2015, Ridley Scott, director of the 1979 film Alien, released The Martian, another renowned movie to occur outside of Earth. After a ferocious storm on Mars, the crew abandoned the station, unintentionally leaving a wounded—but alive—Mark Watney behind. Watney, played by Matt Damon, then colonizes Mars by growing potatoes and discovers how to communicate with NASA back on Earth to plan a rescue mission. Eventually, the crew returns to recover him, permitting them all to return home safely. Following its release, the film immediately received critical acclamation, gaining seven Oscar nods and making a gross profit of over $54 million during opening weekend alone. Part of this fame could be attributed to …show more content…
Once a solid rescue mission is in place, NASA mimics tasks that Watney must perform in order to reach a launch site. People in the lab drill holes in the roof of the rover, jump on the top, and fall in, just as Watney does when Scott juxtaposes the two scenes together. Because of the close placement of these frames, Earth and Mars likewise appear to be much closer in location, therefore it seems like hardly any distance separates Watney from his home planet. Additionally, when Commander Lewis temporarily abandons her crew on the Hermes to retrieve Watney flailing around in space, Scott juxtaposes Lewis with Watney, further emphasizing how near Watney is to finally being rescued. As Watney finally has survival within his grasp, Scott juxtaposes Watney’s experiences with those happening on Earth to demonstrate how Watney’s journey for survival is finally coming to an

The Martian was both an enjoyable book and movie, although there were some inaccuracies. For instance, the dust storm that starts the whole story and the gravity on mars. But, most of the story was accurate. Like, when Mark Watney uses his background knowledge as a botanist and grows potatoes on Mars. To grow potatoes on mars he uses the martian soil and human feces.…

Times have changed. I have seen E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) a few times before in the past and always thought it was more aimed toward kids than adults, nevertheless, rewatching it again with newer eyes I have come to appreciate its cinematic value. The whole aspect of the film is done in such a skillful, clever, and humble way that focuses on family, friendship, and love. Given the fact that this is science fiction and dealing with a mysterious UFO landing, there is some level of anxiety involving the whereabouts of a stranded alien that is mainly felt from the rattled adults (parents, teachers, and government men) in the film. But the obvious spooky nature of the film quickly turns into an uplifting and extremely funny movie that has a sense of wonder and caring that can capture the heart of moviegoing audiences of all ages, young and old.…

Introduction Science from Mary Shelley's age and today are seen in two different lights because of the knowledge known about it at the time. During Shelley’s time period science was still foreign to the average individual, so it could almost be seen as mythical and scary. While in today's modern times, science is accepted and celebrated. In Frankenstein science is shown more as an individual pursuit and what scientist did was in secret and they were secluded from their peers. In the Martian it shows that modern day science is seen more as a collaborative pursuit with people working as a team.…

Defense Compares Alien Abduction to Sex Assault in Derry Case The Defense of Murray Huber, 57, a Derry man, brought in an expert witness Harvard professor Dr. Harrison Pope at the dismissal hearing in an attempt to throw out eighteen counts of sexual abuse and incest. Pope testified that the alleged victim’s “recovered memories” were deceitful and compared the emotional feedback of the alleged victims with victims of highly flimsy traumatic events. Pope presented a study conducted in 2003 on victims suffered from “alien abduction” presented with significant Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, sleep paralysis and psychophysical symptoms. Contrary to the victims’ claims, sufficient evidence showed the abductions were fictitious.…
