Watershed Event Essay

A watershed event is defined by the Oxford dictionary as an event or period marking a turning point in a course of action or state of affairs. One such watershed event that affected me professionally as well as personally was being selected to serve as an officer in the Air National Guard. After eleven years of serving as an enlisted member of both Active Duty Air Force and the Georgia Air National Guard (GANG), I applied and was selected for a commission as an officer in the GANG. At the time of my selection I was serving as a full time aircraft maintenance technician in the GANG, and I was earning a good salary while enjoying job security. Being selected as an officer meant I would have to resign from my full time job with the GANG; therefore, after my training was complete, I would be left without employment other than my new one weekend a month officer position. I had to bet on myself that I could secure a civilian job that paid just as well as my former technician position in order to provide for my family. A person does not know where they are going, what they should be doing, and what has meaning to them. One of the first and most serious casualties of disorientation is likely to be our sense of and plans for the future. This happened to me the last weeks leading up to leaving for officer school. All I could think was that I made a terrible mistake, that I had no job to come home to, how was I going to provide for my family, what is going to happen to all my future plans. I had no idea what was I doing or if I made the right decision. I just had to have faith the gamble I made on myself would pay off.
