What originally began as a seemingly simple break in and burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate Complex in Washington, D.C. became a scandal that would change the nation’s views on politics and presidential power forever. From 1972 to 1974, this scandal was investigated and reported on by two dedicated individuals. Their reports became the country’s insight into what was really going on in the White House. To this day, the Watergate scandal and the names of the two men who broke it wide open, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, are as well known as President Nixon, the first and only president to resign from his post. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein positively influenced the United States in politics and presidential power, as reflected in the literature of the late 20th century. …show more content…
Woodward was born in 1943 in Illinois and attended Yale University with an ROTC scholarship, where he studied history and English literature. He graduated from Yale and went on to spend five years in the U.S. Navy. In 1971, he applied for and entered the Washington Post as a reporter. On the other hand, Carl Bernstein was born in 1944 to parents who were active members of the American Communist Party. Unlike Woodward, Bernstein dropped out of college, but was still able to obtain a job at the Washington Post in 1966. In 1972, Woodward, still a new reporter, covered a story about a break in at the Watergate complex. Bernstein wrote a sidebar piece on Woodward’s story and soon asked his editors if he could cover the story with Woodward. From then until 1974, Woodward and Bernstein covered the Watergate scandal
