The Federal Election Campaign Act Amendments of 1974 helped form the basis for the federal campaign finance law. (United States, Congress, House, Senate) This act basically confined campaigns and campaign committees. The Freedom of Information Act restricted the executive branch. It strengthened the legislative branch. This allowed the media and public to gain access to the information the executive branch had. This act occurred due to Nixon withholding the tapes from the Oval Office, in which he planned the Watergate Scandal. This prevents future presidents from holding back information, in which could help the justice system prosecute them. This reform best helps prevent future similar scandals from occurring. Another act that was a result of the Watergate Scandal was the Government in Sunshine Act. This act was passed in 1976, forcing the government to hold meetings in public. (U.S. News, Article 1) I disagree with this because people were able to vote when Nixon was president and while he ran for reelection. There is no proof that validates voting in political activities increased since Watergate occurred. The Watergate Scandal affected political life, but did not encourage more people to vote. However, it did help motivate them to get more involved in the backgrounds of the politicians and government officials. People now have access to the information and meetings held, so naturally, we can be more involved and have a greater understanding of what is
