Water Wastage
In 2008, a problem was raised against Starbucks, concerning water wastage. It was known that Starbucks was wasting millions of water per day. To defend this fact, Starbucks mentioned that this was done to maintain hygiene in the organisation. However, according to BBC News, the water was running constantly in all its stores. A lady stated that they had no other option, and this water was used to clean their dishes in a healthy way, for the benefits of their customer and employees. Campaigns were done against Starbucks in order to stop this serious water wastage, and trying to compel Starbucks to find other means of cleaning instead. Thus, the project of reducing water consumption in Starbucks was initiated in 2008, where their aim was to reduce water consumption by 25% by 2015. To be able to achieve this goal, they started up conducting experiments, and till now they have been able to reduce water consumption up to 21.1% (Starbucks 2014). Moreover, for a better quality in their products, they used filtration, in order to filter to water, before serving them in the coffees and beverages. In 2013, a new system was introduced in their 503 stores, knowing as ‘new reverse osmosis filtration retrofits’. According to the Global Responsibility Report of Starbucks, this system brought a decrease of 20% in water usage, furthermore, it increases the quality of the beverages (Starbucks Global Responsibility Report 2013). Overall, Starbucks was taking quite a number of measures to decrease the amount of water they used to consume before the scandal of water was raised in 2008. They have been doing their best in finding ways to regain their position and trust in the society. Firstly, by doing experiments, through trial and error, secondly, by implementing the osmosis strategy, and finally, by filtering the source of water in coffee growing regions. Employees being the main stakeholder, the main source of income sold be well taken care of. In case, they are not satisfied with the Starbucks, they may easily create an issue which will eventually damage the image of the organisation. As far as managers and other part-timers are concerned, there are absolute no problem.
Starbucks show enough environmental support by trying to build up greener stores, recycling their cups, developing strategies in order to reduce waste.
So, overall, Starbucks should give more priority on the relations within the organisation, rather than the environmental factors. So far, they have shown respect towards the environment, therefore they can now focus more about building up relationships with their “partners”.
As every organisation, Starbucks also is trying to follow the trend of building a sustainable organisation, this is similar to a competition towards building up a sustainable environment.
