Many athletes struggle to make the decision on what to hydrate themselves with: sports drinks like Gatorade, or tried and true water. Some wonder if the added sugar in sports drinks is really worth it, while some argue that water does not provide enough hydration. Sports scientists have long studied this issue, beginning in 1965 when Gatorade was invented. Studies have come to show that it all comes down to the length and intensity of the user’s workout. Sports drinks are far more beneficial to those who have a very long, intense workout. For those who just have a short, less straining workout, water can be much more healthy. While working out for a very long period of time, a person loses a large quantity of electrolytes. Gatorade is specifically designed to replenish these essential nutrients. A University of Wisconsin study found that a person that drank Gatorade and then walked on a treadmill in hot conditions for 90 minutes was less fatigued than those who drank water or nothing at all. This because the Gatorade replenished the necessary nutrients and electrolytes, while the water did not. One think that sports drinks can beat water at is flavor. Athletes can choose between many different flavor options, appealing to their taste. Studies have shown that children and adults alike are more likely to drink a flavored drink than water. These added flavors, however, add sugar to the mix. Sports drinks contain many more calories than water. Another prime issue is cost. Water is free. Sports drinks can add unnecessary costs to a workout, and, eventually, will add up to many dollars spent. In the grand scheme of things, athletes are going to drink what they want to drink. Personally, I drink water most of the time. This is mostly due to availability, and cost. After basketball games, I will sometimes buy a Gatorade to try and help prevent
