The encapsulation of water-soluble molecules has a vast number of applications in the industry in areas such as pharmaceutical, textile, coatings, food, personal care, household care and agricultural. Here the role of the hydrophilic molecules microencapsulation for each area and what is being encapsulated will be briefly explained, along with the key objectives and challenges.
2.1 Pharmaceutical – In the pharmaceutical industry context, the principal water-soluble actives desired to be encapsulated are small water-soluble drugs, enzymes, vaccines, peptides and DNA [3]. The primary feature of microcapsules in the pharmaceutical industry is the drug delivery with controlled and targeted release, leading to an increase of the drug efficiently and reducing the drug toxicity and side effects [5]. Controlled and targeted delivery can be achieved via a triggered release mechanisms and the employment of targeting groups to direct the capsule to a desired location [6]. The system also must protect the active, have high drug content, low toxicity and the technology must be cost effectively and stable [7]. The biggest challenges for the hydrophilic drug delivery are the poor storage stability, low encapsulation efficiency, the unsuitable pharmacokinetics and the high toxicity of various small drugs [8].
2.2 Food Industry – For the food industry, the encapsulation technology is a useful tool to improve delivery of water soluble bioactive compounds such as antioxidants, vitamins,…
