Water pollution and water shortages are a big problem in Jamaica. There is plenty of rainfall in Jamaica to where there should not be any water shortages. The problem is that Jamaica lacks a water policy and there are few wastewater treatment plants for the reuse of water. No proper management of industries means that they will dump their waste into waterways at their own free will. Due to this, people are not going to access to enough safe and clean water.
The causes of water pollution are surprisingly plentiful. The absolute main cause of water pollution is the lack of enforcement. Even without a drought, one in four jamaicans do not have access to piped water. Those people have to rely on standpipes. A standpipe is a pipe that extends from a water supply. It is very similar to the pipes that are put into high rise building in which fire hoses can be connected to. Another effect of water pollution is that people are left thirsty and cannot wash themselves. This means it is very easy for people to get diseases. The poor people in Jamaica may not be able to get medical help if they were to get a disease. This would make it easy for the disease to spread from person to person fairly easy. A disease such as Ebola could wipe out a huge percent of the population in Jamaica if it were started up. Fresh clean water is an absolute necessity for any person. The Kingston Harbour is the main dumping ground for industries in the the Kingston area. The harbour is the seventh largest natural harbour. It is a recreational amenity that has two marinas. Swimming is no longer permitted due to the water pollution. Fishing which is a big thing in the Kingston harbour, is on the decline. Fish are dieing due to the pollution. Major sewage treatment plants are not functioning which means, “Around 40 million litres of untreated and semi-treated is pumped into the harbour every day”(Enviro News Jamaica). Due to this, the harbour is polluted with organic matter. Bacteria that feed on the decomposing organic matter are using up all of the oxygen in the water.
