Register to read the introduction… (Gianna Andrews) When plastic bags and other debris collect on the surface it blocks the sunlight which enables the plankton to follow out photosynthesis, which means that it cannot produce oxygen. Earth only produces enough oxygen to balance the carbon dioxide that’s produced, if plankton cannot produce oxygen our oxygen supply will be cut in half. If there is no oxygen there can be no life. Plankton does not only produce oxygen, but it is also at the bottom of the food chain. Animals such as fish and turtles eat the algae or plankton, if there is less food for them their will be less food for the predators such as tuna, sharks, and whales. If this happens the entire food web will change. (National Geographic) Plankton supports everything in or living off the ocean, directly or …show more content…
However the solutions aren’t so simple. How does this plastic get cleaned up and once it is cleaned up how can we regulate our plastic pollution to ensure it doesn’t happen again? First the politicians must set guidelines to follow. The National Resource Defense Council is working on three key strategies that I believe can make a huge impact to eliminate plastic water pollution in the U.S. and beyond. The first strategy is holding plastic producers accountable. In many states producers of material such as paint and carpet are responsible for recovering and recycling there product. Producers of plastic should be required to do the same. They should find innovative ways to design better packaging that can be more fully recovered for recycling or reuse, they should also be required to help pay costs to keep plastic out of the environment. According to the National Resource Defense Council they are building a collation of waste management, community, environmental, and business groups support measures to stop plastic pollution at is sources by creating incentives for plastic producers. By creating these incentives they hope these industries will use less packaging for there product, make them recyclable, and ensure that recycling actually happens. Sine most of the plastic in our ocean is so far from any land mass no single government wants to claim responsibility or provide funding to clean all the trash …show more content…
Everyone must work together to clean this trash up! It we don’t our future is going to be trash filled.

Have you ever been swimming in an ocean, and you notice a plastic bag or bottle floating in the water? There are many ways people can pollute the oceans. For starters, oil tankers spill oil into the water (Doc 2.). Boats sink (Doc 2), and eventually the boats break up into pieces and spread across the ocean floor (OI). Next, people dump sewage and garbage from boats and on beaches (Doc 2).…

As a result, plastics usage is rapidly being increased in consumer and industrial products. Secondly, plastic goods do not biodegrade but instead break down into smaller pieces through sunlight. This process is also known as photodegradation. Plastic consumption will lead to insufficient stomach storage to marine animals hence reducing their food intake and eventually starve to death.…

The Surfrider Foundation creatively exemplifies what human pollution and carelessness is resulting in such as creating compelling ads like “Fossil, Bag”. Trash islands, which is a result from human pollution, clutters the oceans as well as contaminates marine biology with plastic and plastic components. Unfortunately, humans will continue to contribute to the trash islands and the marine life epidemic by throwing their plastic products out the window and onto the ground as they live their irresponsible lives. The vicious cycle of human carelessness is resulting into the consumption of their very own trash: plastic bags and plastic products. The more that plastic is produced and dumped into the ocean, the more prevalent plastic really is within human daily life, as well as inside…

Chapter Nine: Unwholesome Waters The Deepwater Horizon spilled over four million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. These oil companies learned they are far from being prepared for accidents such as this. Even though, this killed copious amounts of marine life, boats and other water vessels powered by fossil fuels kill more marine life each year with the chemical they leave in the water. Why not stop using oil?…

Marcus Eriksen and his colleagues explain in a 2014 article Plastic Pollution in the World 's Oceans, that there is an estimate of 5.25 trillion plastic particles weighing about 269,000 tons are floating in the world 's oceans. Also, according to Renee Cho in the 2011 article Our Oceans: A Plastic Soup, Cho states that an average amount of time for a plastic water bottle to decompose is around 450 years . Those fishes and other marine animals will be around the plastic waste for years before it decays or when someone removes it from the ocean. Surfrider and Rise above Plastic states that they strive for the best so that each and every sea creature can have a safe environment to live in and the way for that to be accomplished are to have decreased the amount of plastic in the…

It is estimated that there is about 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic and other pieces of trash floating around the top of the ocean. Researchers estimated that about ten percent of garbage goes into the ocean every year. This is a major problem that needs to be controlled somehow.…

In the article "Choking the Oceans With Plastic” by Charles Moore explains the existing pollution in our ocean and how different states in the United States are implementing new laws and regulations in their city to reduce pollution going into the ocean. California was mentioned and has been on structural controls, such as covering gutters and catch basins with screens. Moore also includes that many activists around the world are lobbying to ban such plastic materials for our goods. Moore then adds that the city of California has implemented a ban on throwaway plastic materials; he states, “In California, nearly 100 municipalities have passed ordinances banning throwaway plastic bags and the Senate is considering a statewide ban.” (Moore 1)…

According to the article “How we Ruined the Oceans,” by the Week, the human race is destroying the world’s oceans by the overproduction of plastics and overfishing, and the the only way to counteract the effects is to join together and try to fix the underlying problem that affects every living thing on the Earth. Humans are overfishing the oceans, which causes a significant imbalance in the food chain. The oceans are progressively getting more polluted, and it is at the point where it is virtually impossible to remove all the plastic harming oceanic ecosystems. Although some scientists say it's not too late to reverse the effects, as long as climate change is acted upon with great urgency.…

Plastic bags make it so much easier to carry our groceries as compared to paper bags. Plastic wrappers do not stick to the food product and can be disposed of without taking up much. Utensils made of plastics make cleaning up easier, because they can just be thrown away. All of these luxuries have come from the invention of using plastics to make disposables, but such disposable items are not disposable in the sense that they are hard to break down. Thus, the “luxuries” actually made me realize the dangers of overusing plastics, leading me to look into the environment and how humans are harming the environment outside of plastic…
