For my senior project, I decided to research water pollution, and how it affects ocean life and its inhabitants. I will be answering questions that I have about water pollution and how it 's affecting our oceans. The reason I’m doing my project on this topic is because I find it very interesting, and I also want to bring awareness to this issue. It 's a worldwide problem that needs to be addressed, because if we continue to do nothing, I believe that ocean life as we know it will go extinct. With this project I hope to learn many things, for example I want to learn what species are being affected by water pollution, in what ways, and specifically how it is affecting their health. Before I answer this question, it is important to understand what water pollution is, in order to decide if what I say is truly negative or positive. Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). This form of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. Plastic is the most common element that is found in the ocean, and it is harmful for the environment as it doesn’t break down easily, and it 's often considered as food by marine animals, and more than a million sea birds and mammals are killed each year by ingestion of plastic. A negative effect of ocean pollution is contaminated drinking water, The risks of your health being negatively impacted by polluted drinking water in a developed country is small in comparison with developing countries. However, it is possible to become ill from contaminated water. While another major negative effect of water pollution is the death of marine animals. Some marine animals die when their waters are contaminated, and some die when they try to eat solid objects that they think are food, but is actually trash. Another negative effect is oil spills, in the website of Enviopol, they tell a story of an oil spill that happened and 16,000 miles of a US coastline was affected. This caused enormous damage, and after a period of 6 months, over 8,000 animals were reported dead because of the polluted water. Some of the animals that were affected were birds, turtles, mammals, and fish. Can you imagine that? 8,000 animals in 6 months! This was just because of one oil spill. Can you imagine a couple of oil spills? That would be a massacre.
