Water On Mars Research Paper

Great Essays
For more than fifteen years, the search for sign of water on Mars has finally been found conclusive. Findings from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provided the definite evidence that water flows periodically throughout Mars. Using an imaging spectrometer on the MRO, researchers saw hydrated minerals that are seen as streaks on slopes. These streaks fade in cooler seasons and seem to flow down, as well as darken during the warmer seasons. These flows are called recurring slop linea (RSL). Additionally, the finding of the hydrated minerals causes the darker colors seen on the streaks. Hydrated minerals such as perchlorates have helped interpret the spectral signatures of hydrated salts at several RSL locations. Perchlorates were found by the Curiosity rover and the Phoenix Lander. …show more content…
Although some evidence had already been found in 2000 because of valleys, this idea was found to be very controversial and was heavily debated. Scientists believe, due to observations, that at one point, Mars was covered by oceans and rivers. It was once able to support life in some of its areas because of its warm and wet temperatures. Since Mars is smaller in size it has less gravity and a thinner atmosphere than Earth. Evidently, 87% of water has been lost to space due to evaporation. According to NASA, around 4.3 billion years ago its ocean held more water than the Arctic Ocean. It would have occupied half of Mars’ northern hemisphere and reached depths of a mile or greater in numerous areas. Mars is not the dry, desert planet that people know it to

The connection between my article Mars, the red planet and The Martian by Andy Weir is that Mark Watney uses Mars’s two moons Phobos and Deimos to help him travel to the Pathfinder so he can communicate with NASA for help. When he travels at night he can’t see any of the landmarks like the craters to help him know the direction he is going so he uses Phobos and Deimos to help him travel. “Mars doesn’t have a magnetic field. So I navigate by Phobos. It whips around Mars so fast it actually rises and sets twice a day, running west to east.…

seven times as much water as it does today with there being enough water to cover almost 20% of mars’ surface. We know this because the isotope of hydrogen deuterium is heavily present on Mars. Knowing this allows us to hypothesize how much water was once on Mars billions of years ago. Hydrogen is lighter then its isotope deuterium so it escapes the atmosphere faster leaving behind large amounts of deuterium which seems to indicate that there was at one time a large amount of liquid water on the planet.…

Mars is a gigantic desert, so it has many sandstorms. That means the rocks are smooth, but one must still go over them. “The undercarriage of the rover is taller than any of the rocks around here, and the hills are gently sloping affairs, smoothed by eons of sandstorms” (Weir, 96). Driving on a deserted desert planet is cool, and dangerous, therefore it is probably inhabited with aliens. One of the first Mars rovers was Pathfinder, so it would just be boring without it.…

Then Upper and Lower Adair Formation comes with being younger. The younger of this two is the Lower Adair Formation with 30 million years old.
