Water On Mars Research Paper

For more than fifteen years, the search for any sign of water on Mars has finally been found conclusive. Findings from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provided the definite evidence that water flows periodically throughout Mars. Using a spectrometer on the MRO, researchers saw hydrated minerals that are seen as streaks. These streaks fade in cooler seasons and seem to flow down as well as darken during the warmer seasons. These flows are called recurring slop linea and the finding of the hydrated minerals cause the darker colors seen on the streaks. Hydrated minerals such as perchlorates have helped interpret the spectral signatures of hydrated salts at several RSL locations. Perchlorates were found by the Curiosity rover and the Phoenix Lander. …show more content…
Although some evidence had already been found in 2000 because of gullies, this idea was very controversial. Scientists believe, due to observations, that at one point, Mars was covered by oceans and rivers. It was once able to support life in some of its areas because of its warm and wet temperatures. Yet, owing to its small size it has less gravity and a thinner atmosphere than Earth. Evidently, 87% of water has been lost to space due to evaporation. According to NASA, around 4.3 billion years ago its ocean held more water than the Arctic Ocean. It would have occupied half of Mars’ northern hemisphere and reaching depths of a mile or greater in numerous areas. As scientist compare the ratio of HDO (hydrogen replaced by a heavier atom termed deuterium) to H2O they can measure the atmospheric changes of Mars throughout the years as well as the amount of water that has been lost to space. Mars is not the dry, desert planet that people know it to

The connection between my article Mars, the red planet and The Martian by Andy Weir is that Mark Watney uses Mars’s two moons Phobos and Deimos to help him travel to the Pathfinder so he can communicate with NASA for help. When he travels at night he can’t see any of the landmarks like the craters to help him know the direction he is going so he uses Phobos and Deimos to help him travel. “Mars doesn’t have a magnetic field. So I navigate by Phobos. It whips around Mars so fast it actually rises and sets twice a day, running west to east.…

Many have asked the question why doesn't Mars have oceans? A recent breakthrough discovery has confirmed that liquid water does exist on Mars. This means there is the potential for life to exist here. However, this water is very minimal compared to previous levels of water found on Mars. A study done by Geronimo Villanueva and Michael Mumma of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center reveals that Mars used to have at minimum…

Mars would be the planet to expect to show the greatest variation in apparent brightness as seen from Earth. None of the planets makes a large percentage change in its distance from the Sun. Mercury only makes a moderate change in its distance from Earth, which tends to be canceled by its phases. Mercury can hardly be seen except near Greatest Elongation, so it’s a never far from being a half-Mercury phase if visible. Venus makes a large fractional change only about 0.3 to 1.6 AU, but this is offset by the smaller fraction of illuminated surface, we see due to the phases.…

Since 2010, scientists have been trying to figure out why dark lines appear and disappear seasonally on the surface of Mars. The lines would appear and vanish in the same places during the warmer seasons, near the planet’s equator. This phenomenon is known as slope lineae. NASA has just confirmed that saltwater found in perchlorates’ crystal structure is what causes this to happen. This is very controversial because it raises the intriguing questions of whether or not life could exist on Mars.…

Life in the solar system has been explored and debated over centuries, with Mars being the greatest subject of interest. This is due to the existence of water ice on its surface, and water vapour in its atmosphere. The existence of water is pivotal in the exploration of Mars, as it may hold vital information regarding the history of the planet. Scientists have implemented the ideology to ‘follow the water’, as the existence of water allows for life to grow, and more importantly, exist.…

Finding a source of water on Mars will be an implication of prolonged human exploration of the planet. The obvious answer would be to send it there beforehand, but that is not feasible. Water is very heavy and a manned exploration zone would need a lot of it, which develops a problem. There are many proposed solutions, including the decomposition of the hydrazine, or spent rocket fuel. This is efficient because of the practicality of the dual usage of the fuel and using the excess hydrogen gas which would already be on Mars, but the combustion reaction requires extremely high temperatures.…
