Ralph tried implementing an adult way of thinking on an uneducated population. The boys are not yet entrenched in the adult world of right and wrong so they are not understanding of why Ralph enforced elements of society like building huts and keeping the fire going. They do not know why these elements are established or why they are necessary. Ralph knows that the boys need to build huts, but the other boys do not seem to understand the importance of it, "Jack flushed. 'We want meat.' 'Well, we haven't got any yet. And we want shelters. Besides, the rest of your hunters came back hours ago. They’ve been swimming.'" (51). Ralph understands what is required to survive, but he does not impose his will on the boys to do as he says. This is where the democracy became dangerous. Gaps begin to widen for Jack to come and take over the society. To follow, the democratic approach is too strict for the boys so Ralph became disliked by many of them. For instance, when Jack invites the boys for a feast, "'Listen all of you. Me and my hunters, we're living along the beach by a flat rock. We hunt and feast and have fun. If you want to join my tribe come and see us. Perhaps I'll let you join. Perhaps not.'"
