“Water Fluoridation has changed the smiles of Americans for 57 years” –Scott M. Presson, DDS, MPH, and Chief of the Program Services Branch in the division of Oral Health at the Center for Dieses Control and Prevention (Molony).
Water fluoridation is defined as; “to add fluoride to drinking water to reduce tooth decay” (Fallon). Most communities have fluoridated drinking water. Almost all water contains some naturally occurring fluoride, but at levels that are too low to prevent tooth decay (Center for Disease Control). Many communities adjust the fluoride concentration in their water supply to a safe recommended level to reduce tooth decay and promote good oral health. All communities should have …show more content…
The bacteria that causes tooth decay lives in plaque, which is the organic white or yellow material that sticks to teeth. These bacteria live off the sugar that is ingested through a daily diet. When the bacteria are living off the sugar, an acid is produced, which begins to demineralize the tooth enamel and causes tooth decay (Feldman). A quote from Peter L. Platterborze also explains “Fluoride directly inhibits this bacterial process and thus maintain higher pH levels in the mouth.” The higher the pH level, the more basic the solution. It is good to have a higher pH in the mouth because that means it is less acidic and teeth will not …show more content…
D Biochemistry and believes fluoride causes cancer (Marshall). Since he is a Ph. D Biochemist, people believe him when he announces false claims with no evidence. “There is little data that shows fluoride may be a cancer causing agent” (Marshall). The National Toxicology Program reported that male rates having life-long fluoride exposal had increases of abnormalities, however, that same study did not find any cancer increase with the rats (Fallon). The Environmental Protection Agency reviewed the literature of fluoride in 1986 that examined the effects of fluoridation, such as decrease in immune system, tooth discoloration, inhibition of enzymes, and large amounts of bone growth. To their findings, there was no scientific evidence to back any of these false claims
