Water Erosion

Purpose
The purpose of this lab is to examine the streamflow and how it removes soil from the banking over time.

Background Information “Water erosion comes in several different forms with various causes. No matter the differences, we humans can have a large impact on our water quality and erosion rates. While the causes of erosion by water are generally natural, we can play a large role in reducing water erosion, and preventing water pollution”(GEI Works Erosion Pollution). There are 4 types of water erosion that can occur is Sheet,Rill,Gully,Splash. Sheet erosion is the Removal of a “thin layer of soil from a large area. Rill erosion is a series of small channels on a slope carved by running water” (Plant and Soil Sciences eLibrary). Gully erosion is a “large, wide channels carved by running water. As a rule of thumb, a gully is large enough that it cannot be smoothed out with conventional tillage equipment”(Plant and Soil Sciences eLibrary). Splash erosion is the direct movement of soil from splashing. Soil particles can be thrown as far as 3 feet by raindrop splash. The impact of a water droplet can dislodge soil particles making them susceptible to erosion, Water erosion usually is most often active in the Spring season like in April where it rains

This error would lead to some difficulty and potentially bad results. Rather than putting it at a 30 degree i think that's a bit too high, try a 20 degree angle it's not too short of a angle to make the stream flow, this will help with when you're going to weight the data because some pieces of dirt fall into the water creates a disaster. Some real world connection with water erosion is when you're working on construction and when you're working with cement trying to work on a staircase or a patio you can't work when it's raining because it will mess up

Lab testing for metals, pH, and oxygen levels is done on the water leaving the facility to ensure that there will be no damage done to the river ecosystem when the water is released. However, during times of high rainfall there is an influx of water, and it can cause the facility to flood, causing waste and sludge to contaminate nearby land and water. In these cases, waste may contaminate water sources such as rivers and ponds. Additionally, nearby land could get damaged and require…

This is assumed to be a consequence of the physical excavated hole, dense and waterlogged soil possibly caused by excavation, as well as human presence, construction equipment and small water body produced from directional drilling. Once drilling for the connecting pipe begins there will be a displacement of moderate volumes of soil and sediment from beneath the surface. These are to be stored on site and used as material for the construction of the artificial island on Site 1. Any excess is to be collected by trucks and transported elsewhere. A portion of this soil and sediments which cannot be completely collected will leach into surrounding water supply, impacting on the quality of the water as a source for local fauna and flora and quality of the water which flows into the Yarra River.…

(McGivern 1). A water shed is the section of land in which run off “drains” into a “common outlet” (Lattuca 123 and Raven et.al. 66). The Environmental lab students conducted this study to answer few questions like: is the water less polluted than before, can this stream support some type of life or is this stream up to standards for drinking water. The goal of this study was to examine the stream’s abiotic and biotic factors to further examine how natural and human activities impact…

There are 11 dams and two creeks running through the eastern side of the farm. We only have to place 3 troughs’ as these paddocks have little or no access to the creek or to a dam. To conserve and protect some of the creek, in concern of drying out the creek and wrecking the natural vegetation, we are going to fence of creek access from paddocks 6 & 7. We are also going to revegetate parts of the creek as trees aerate the water and reduce the severity of erosion on the banks of the creek. To get the water to the troughs we are laying pipes underneath the ground.…

The study of microbiology requires not only understanding the microscopic organisms, but also the understanding of lab techniques and procedures used to identify, control, and manipulate microorganisms. The identification of microorganisms is not only important in microbiology lab, but also in the medical field to identify an agent of a disease that will help treat the patient by using the correct antibiotics to kill off the host. In this unknown lab report, techniques and procedures learned in the microbiology laboratory during the semester that was performed to test ones practical understanding of microbiology. The sole purpose of the unknown lab is to demonstrate understanding of the experimental methods and lab techniques learned during…

Salt sensitive plants begin to die and can leave the soil prone to erosion. High salt content also causes the decline of soil structure which further exacerbates soil erosion. This is extremely hazardous to the catchment although the salinity levels of the locations tested were quite minimal which reinforces the healthiness of the catchment. (Northern Central Catchment Management Authority, n.d) The exploitation from cyclones, high tides and el ninos sweeps debris into waterways, increasing the turbidity of the water. The Pioneer River Catchment, located in North Queensland is subject to such natural hazards.…

The Grand Slam of Soil Conservation Just imagine, you’re in a softball game, you have just rounded third base and are trying to beat the ball home. In a desperate effort to score; you slide, and dust flies- making it momentarily impossible to see. Your eyes, nose, and mouth are covered in the freshly raked earth of the ball field. This scenario is something that most of us today can relate to. But in the early 1900s, in several counties across Oklahoma and throughout the Great Plains, many days when men, women, and children would venture from their homes, the dirt they were overwhelmed with wasn’t part of a fun and thrilling ball game; it was from one of the most devastating man-made ecological disasters in American history.…

Usually water erosion happens during rainfalls, snow melts. Runoffs as well because it helps carry away small materials like soil and rocks. There are also more types of erosion like gully erosion and sheet erosion. Sheet erosion is the removal of of soil in thin layers by raindrops and overland flow. Gully erosion is the removal of soil along the drainage lines by surface water runoff.…

The Holderness coast is located on the east coast of England. Although it is popular among tourists and bird watching afrionados, at the same time, It is one of the Europe’s fastest eroding coast lines. Approximately 2 million tonnes of material get eroded, which is about 1 to 2 meters of erosion occurs every year. Because of this rapid erosion, about 30 villages have been sank into the sea since the Roman times. This is due to the fact that the Holderness Coast is made of Cretaceous Chelk, and is covered by bolder cray that deposited from the last gracial retreat about 10000 years ago.…

Coastal geomorphology is similar to geomorphology, but the area of focus is on seas and oceans (Davidson-Arnott, 2010). Researches study the development and progression of the coast and how it reacts under particular conditions including sea level changes. The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report in 2013 stated that sea level rise will occur in approximately 95% of the ocean area, with estimates that seas will rise between 26 and 82 cm. Therefore, we can assume it is probable that the geomorphological changes on the coast will have a profound impact on the existing landforms. In this essay, I will describe the predicted impacts on coastal geomorphology in relation to sea level rise.…
