The Water Bottle Debate:
What’s the Big Deal? Water bottles have not always been around and ever since there popularity began the debate over whether or not people should have them has been a very controversial topic. Some argue that not only do they cause extra unneeded pollution, but are also unneeded since tap water is available. While some say this, others will counter by discussing the benefits of having a healthy option for a drink on the go. Using water bottles is a means to help people have easier access to a healthy vital life necessity no matter where someone might be. For instance, if an American were to go to Mexico on vacation it is known that drinking the water there is unsafe for people who are not accustomed to it, so therefore water bottles are used in order for people to have a safe water source. Not just in Mexico do people see these problems either; other locations in the world deal with the issue of not have sanitary drinking water, and if it weren’t for bottled water there would be many more people suffering from dehydration or worse. Thomas J. Lauria, a representative for the International Bottled Water Association, discusses and brings to focus a different perspective on water bottles that truly make on question why they ever wanted to dispose them in the first place. Lauria brings to light that water bottles are an extremely healthy option when paired up to soft drinks, and that even though the plastic from bottled water is bad for the environment, it has the smallest impact on the environment out of all packaged drinks. Lauria also argues that, “[b]ottled water provides a healthy choice when tap water is not accessible,” he then continues to say that if the world were rid of water bottles a research that was conducted concluded that “one-half of people would choose soda instead” (665). After seeing those results from the research not many can argue that getting rid of water bottles is a good …show more content…
For certain mega companies though, they become known by another name, pricy, but are they truly too pricy for all they are trying to offer? According to Voss, Artesian water from Norway, they are about so much more than providing bottled water for people. According to the Voss website, CEO Jack Belsito and his company work to raise awareness about the lack of clean water in certain countries, and the hardships that women and children go through every day to try and get water to survive. The Website is set up to show the good that they work towards and contributions to Africa. Voss states, “Voss Foundation is dedicated to providing access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene as a means to enable community-driven development in Sub-Saharan Africa and raising awareness of the ongoing need in the region” (Web). With this huge company working as hard as they do to help these poverty stricken countries, it makes having to pay the extra price on the water worthwhile. If more water bottle industries were to try this even by just raising the price by less than twenty-five cents these countries could possibly begin to see the end of their hard

Isabel Johnson’s article “Bottled Water, Go Away” brings up a different perspective to an ongoing debate over the impacts of plastic water bottles on the world. She presents both the pros and cons of bottled water. Her reasons, however, do not provide a strong argument since she does not clearly support a single claim. Nonetheless, the reasoning behind her logic is supported using information obtained from research. Her credibility is built, but at the same time lost, from using these resources because they are not suitable to cite.…

One out of every six water bottles gets recycled; if a bottle is filled up by a fourth of oil, that same amount of oil was used in its production. Fracking actually pollutes water so bad that it is next to impossible to purify. In 'The Curse of Water Bottles' and 'Fracking Threatens Everyone', the authors reveal the harm done by those two 'convenient' sources.…

The documentary “Tapped” sheds some light on the dangers of bottled water. One of my favorite points the documentary talks about is how the thousands and thousands of plastic water bottles are affecting us and our world. Yes, while bottled water may be convenient for us humans who are always going and going, it's not very convenient for the rest of the world. Our environment was not grown with plastic. Plastic is not nature based, therefore it is not organic, meaning it can’t decompose, or give anything to the environment except pollution, death, and trash.…

Water is necessary for life, and clean drinking water is essential. Many people believe that bottled water is better for you than tap water. I think that tap water is better because bottled water is bad for the environment, it is less economical, and the toxins used in plastic water bottles are dangerous for our health. To begin with, tap water is better than bottled water because it is safer for the environment. When somebody drinks a glass of water and they use tap water they would usually use a glass and then just have to wash it.…

First of all unlike what Annie Leonard had stated, bottled water is, in fact, an extremely well regulated product that is proven to be strictly coordinated by the IBWA, making it also healthy for the society. In Annie’s script “The Story of Bottled Water,” she had once stated, “...In many ways bottled water is less regulated than tap.” Although she claimed that bottled water is less regulated than tap water, the fact still remain that bottled water is generally cleaner and more coordinated than tap as proven by IBWA, an association formed by hundreds of experts, in the statement, “Bottled water is a packaged food product regulated by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which requires bottled water to comply with bottled water-specific…

Some say we should drink it from the purified tap, and others think it’s best to drink it from individual bottled water. While many people around the world leave faucets running, do not fix leaky pipes, and waste valuable drinking water, “women and children spend 125 million hours each day collecting water” in places such as Africa and Asia, “⅓ of the global population lives without access to a toilet”, and “every 90 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease” (Water.org). On average, thirsty customers in the U.S. throw away sixty million water bottles a day, and for every five water bottles consumed, one is recycled. The length of time for plastic water bottles to decompose is between four hundred and one thousand years. People may choose to drink bottled water over tap water with the misconception that it is the cleaner, tastier, or even a healthier choice. The rate at which people are consuming bottled water is causing landfills to be filled with approximately seventy-five percent of the plastic water bottles that are made. While bottled water sales increase, the consumption of tap water is the most advantageous choice for health benefits, environment conservation, and affordability as a choice for the consumer.…
