Water Bottle Rockets

The performance of bottle rockets can be controlled by a multitude of factors. To understand these factors, mathematics can show us how they interact and how they affect performance.

Water Bottle Rockets are mainly used for educational purposes in schools. They are used to explore basic aerodynamics and physics. Water rockets demonstrate many different forces such as weight, thrust, lift, and drag. Basic parts of a common bottle rocket include a nose cone, fins, a base, and a launcher used to launch the rocket.

Rocket propulsion started showing up in history around 400 B.C. when a Greek by the name of Archytas used steam to propel a model pigeon (About Water Rockets). The first “conventional” rocket was created during the Song Dynasty in China in the 13th century. Small amounts of gunpowder were attached to small sticks and set off, making the first “fireworks” (About Water Rockets). The first water bottle rocket was created in 1930 by Professor Jean LeBot in France. He used a champagne bottle partially filled with water and compressed air from a bicycle tire pump to launch the rocket (About Water Rockets). Since the bottle was made out of glass, it would smash upon impact.

Water rockets can be very dangerous if handled improperly or if there is faulty equipment or construction. Safety goggles should always be worn as loose parts or even the rocket itself presents the risk of poking somebody in the eye. Also there should be no metal parts used in the construction of a water rocket. Metal parts could become very dangerous projectiles quickly if a rocket falls apart. The rocket also should only be launched in a large, open, area where there are a small amount of people in. Finally the bottle should have a max inflation rate of 100 psi (Urieli), in our project we used half of

I needed to build a water rocket that would be aerodynamic, light, and have the ability to glide down to elongate flight time. I started out researching different bottle rocket designs to find what would work best. While researching, I found that having a slimmer bottle on top of the base bottle, versus having two regular sized soda bottles would be more aerodynamic and would allow me to give the rocket a more “bullet” shaped body. When looking at fins, those with larger fins worked more efficiently than those with smaller fins. Those fins that were slimmer toward the top and widened down seemed to work better than those that were rectangular.…

A pipet bulb was used as the rocket and Oxygen and Acetylene gas were created through test tube reaction and captures in the pipet bulb. The mixture inside the bulb was then ignited on a launch pad and the distance of the flight was recorded. In this experiment, the results showed that the 1:1 ratio of Oxygen to Acetylene gas provided that largest reaction and largest propulsion of the rocket bulb. This means that, within this experiment, the most successful ratio of Oxygen to Acetylene gas for a rocket bulb would be 1:1.…

    Bottle Rocket Experiment

Discussion It can be seen from the experimental data, that the relationship between the difference in initial pressure inside the bottle rocket and the atmosphere, and the vertical height reached by the bottle rocket after 0.1 seconds, is proportional. This is quantitatively demonstrated by the high R2 value of 0.99533 of the graphed relationship, which indicates the likeness of points in a data set to an established trend; where 1 = a perfect relationship. The gradient of 0.0236 in the best fit regression line of the data, indicates that for every increase of 1 PSI in pressure inside the rocket, 0.0236 more vertical meters were travelled by the rocket in the first 0.1 seconds of its motion. This is only approximately 30% of the distance per PSI increase value of the predicted function in the hypothesis, which postulated that 0.0792m more would be covered in the first 0.1 seconds of motion per increase of 1 PSI.…

The two biggest factors affecting the geyser are the roughness of the candy used and the rate at which it sinks to the bottom of the soda bottle. Other factors that affect the growth rate or total number of carbon dioxide bubbles also change the geyser’s height, such as temperature and the original surface tension of the soda. Diet Coke makes a better spectacle than regular Coca-Cola because both aspartame and benzonatate (artificially sweetened drinks) lower surface tension more than sugar does.…

You might think that there is some ingredient in a Mentos candy that causes a chemical reaction with the soda pop, like the way baking soda reacts with vinegar. But the amazing eruption that takes place when Mentos are dropped into Diet Coke or other brands of diet soda pop is not a chemical reaction at all! Instead it is a physical reaction.…

It is well known that fire fighters expose themselves to many hazards, from toxic gases, structural collapse, to fire and extreme heat. They don’t do it for glory but for the desire to help protect property and the people in their community. To help minimize risk to their health and safety, fire fighters use and carry protective equipment and wear specialized protective clothing, known as PPE. The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the fire truck and equipment it carries has evolved drastically from the first fire fighters to now.…

Experiments involving chemical reactions can be performed using simple household ingredients and products such as baking soda and vinegar. When baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) reacts with ethanoic acid which is found in vinegar in a 1:1 ration, the reaction will produce three different products which are water, carbon dioxide and Sodium acetate. The reaction is: NaHCO3 + HC2H3O2 → NaC2H3O2 + H2O + CO2 In the experiment, the quantitative relationship between the two reagents which is the limiting reagent and which is the excess reagent will been found.…
