I had more difficulty understanding the therapies that did not provide agendas because I personally believe that structure and organization are extremely important in therapy. When the therapist is silent at times it was often uncomfortable to watch. My personal opinion is that when someone is silent when spoken to it is for two reasons. 1. They have no interest in what you are saying because they are bored. 2. They are ignoring you and occupied with other things on their mind. I noticed in some sessions that there were silent moments. For example: In session 2, the therapist observed that Stan was reluctant and holding back and he communicated with Stan that he felt that he may be doing a lot of thinking. Stan states “Sometimes I feel like I have a loss for words”. Through communication, Stan and the therapist were both able to resolve the issues and continue on with a positive therapeutic experience. I also want to add that after watching the Stan sessions I gained important ideas on how to provide nondirective feedback to the client to show an understanding of what the client is saying. For example, Dr. Corey would say things like “mmhmm” and “uh huh” to Stan during their sessions. I also noticed Dr. Corey paraphrasing. It is important to me as a worker in the mental health field because I need to be able to make sure that I understand the client correctly. By paraphrasing, I can eliminate anything that was
