Watcher At The Gate Analysis

Decent Essays

Something that makes them question the worth of their work and belittles their confidence. While reading “notorious pencil sharpeners, ribbon changers, plant waterers...They’d rather die than risk making a fool of themselves” I realized that there are many things a watcher will do to make ones literature seem like less than perfection for the sake of not falling into embarrassment.

As for me, I am not an avid writer. When writing, my watcher is the voice inside my head that is uncertain of the quality of my words. She likes my non-fiction writing simply because it is hard to get wrong with the facts, but when it comes

You know that moment, that oh so wonderful moment, when someone takes the time to put pen to paper and write something that perfectly pairs words to your emotions and psychological state of mind? Much like a juvenile game of match the word with the picture, that we all greatly enjoyed playing in kindergarten. And you think to yourself, this person gets me, they understand what it is like to live with these thoughts, bucking around like a bull in a china shop. What a feeling it is to truly feel appreciated. That is precisely how I felt when reading Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird, understood and not sequestered in my own sense of panic, worry, doubt, anxiousness, and the ability to become utterly distracted by everything under the sun as soon as…

In De Quincy's philosophical essay On the Knocking at the Gate in Macbeth, De Quincy develops certain theories towards this topic. Based on his essay I agree with his theory due to the reason that he states "some great storm of passion--jealousy, ambition, vengeance, hatred--which will create a hell within him; and into this hell we are to look." Macbeth as well as Lady Macbeth let jealousy and vengeance consume them that when they executed Duncan it was as if their human self left and hey became the Devil and opened the gates of…

Linda Chen Mr. Felder AP Language & Composition 25 August 2016 Comparison of On Writing: A Memoir and On Writing Well Stephen King’s memoir, On Writing, is a novel about King’s experiences as a writer and was effective in teaching amateur writers what it is truly like to be an author. Although his teachings are not as direct in his book as Zinsser’s, most of his rare advice are just as useful. Overall, Stephen King applied many of the concepts suggested by William Zinsser into his memoir, however there are parts in King’s book where Zinsser’s teachings are not applied.…

In the short story written by John Updike “Outage” one can see through the eyes of a few strategy texneks. Such as the Readers-Response, which looks at how a reader reacts to a written work throughout a reading. Another exilant strategy would be the Biographical strategy; in this strategy a reader doesn’t merely look at the written work but also takes into consideration the person who wrote the given work. Someone choosing to use the readers-response on the work “Outage” (or any work) might read the story with many personal biases based off how they understand the given scenario or dialogue. Social class, life style, education, religion, and many other factors would also come into play for each individual audience member.…

Conclusion What this essay seeks to achieve, at the end of all of this, is a vision of the new kind of scholarship Halpern calls on us to strive toward at the end of her essay: First, we might stop seeing our students’ growing distance from sentimental rhetoric— something I used to think of as proof of a job well-done—as an unmixed blessing. We should not let them forget or forget to value the kinds of reading practices they give up when they emulate currently dominant critical habits. In fact, we can use these sentimental texts to begin a discussion about some things that have often gone unremarked, at least in my classroom: the distance there can be between how a text wants to be read and how undergraduates and especially graduate students are trained to read it, as well as the benefits and costs of being (or at least pretending to be) a single kind of reader.…

What writing means to me and why I prefer to shy away from it, until now. Being an Adult Learner, having been out of school for more than 30 years my weaknesses outweigh my strengths. My greatest weakness in writing, I would have to say is my spelling and use of grammar. I have recently been diagnosed with a slight learning disability which explains my problems with spelling and grammar. Having 4 children who I am very close too helps alleviate a huge portion of my inhibitions about writing, that combined with the newer technologies of programs like MS Word and other programs like it that have spell and grammar check help me in my daily writing needs.…

Writing is different for everyone. We all have interesting stories to tell. If there is one thing that is true for every writer, it is that we all have an inner critic. Allegra Goodman advises writers how to get past their inner critic in her article, “Calming the Inner Critic and Getting to Work”. Silencing my inner judgments can be one of the most challenging parts of writing, but once the critic is silenced something magical and therapeutic emerges.…

As a student, I am better at reading rather than a writing, or listening. I am more interested in fantasy books due the adventurous vibes it gives you while reading. The first fantasy book I read was, Eragon, written by, Christopher Paolini. This book was absolutely phenomenal just like the rest of fantasy related books. This is because not only the character development was great, but the story actually gives you enough detail to visualize the background sequence of the tale.…

I believe Walker’s reason for constantly using the word fat in her article is because she is trying to change the negative connotation that is associated with this word. The repetition of the word “fat” and her stand against a pocrescophobic society sheds light on the real issues of body image. I agree with her stance because beauty is heavily associated with weight. I believe one should love their body and if they are not hurting anyone, then they should be free to do or look however they want.…

Going back over my fifth grade notebooks has not once failed to make me laugh and cringe at my boy troubles and lists of cute boys in my class. I love words. I love reading them, writing them and interpreting them. Through all phases of life, I had a usual nature to try and write my feelings down and call it art, even if it were scribbles on a Post-It note. Same goes for the song stanzas I wrote in seventh grade that were really loosely based on a Taylor Swift song and are still relatable today.…
