The film “Wasteland” is about an artist named Vik Muniz who visits Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and goes to the largest garbage landfill in the world called Jardim Gramacho. He visits this landfill with intentions on producing a new art project, so he picks six of the garbage pickers and allows them to participate in the creation of what came out to be a success work of art.
Vik Muniz wanted to take photos of the garbage pickers and sell them at auctions so that he can raise money from them and give back to the association that Tiao created and also to give recognition to the people at the landfill who are not really focused on or known. His project helped some of the women, in particular Isis, realize that they do not want to work as a garbage picker anymore but instead she wants to do something better with her life, something that makes her happy. …show more content…
Tiao created the organization in order to raise the money with the rest of the community in order for them to have the opportunity to build the recycling center. Recycling is essential for this community because of the amount of garbage that gets sent to the landfill, Jardim Gramacho. This can be related to “Righteous Dopefiend,” where the Edgewater residences are facing “challenges of treatment [which] are exacerbated by inadequate public funding…”(272). Both of these communities were denied rights to obtain something that would alter their community in a positive way. Although they are very different situations, they both represent circumstances where the government has neglected them in a way. As the auction ended, Tiao started to cry and Vik says “You’re the strong one. You’re the one that’s beautiful.” When Vik says this, I knew that the work he did was really genuine and he really wanted to give back to this
