Once again a significant flaw to Rebarb’s suggestion of closing down faculties. In Albrecht Classen’s “The Challenges of the Humanities, Past, Present, and Future: Why the Middle Ages Mean so Much for Us Today and Tomorrow" he discusses how learning about the past does so, through different mediums of literature and subjects in the humanities: philosophy, religion, and literature itself. One way, Classen demonstrates this point is by telling his own story of learning about the past in the 70s and 80s. Even with the respect to technical writing and communications, Rebarb disregards other just-as-important subjects within the faculties, including history and philosophy. His passage on this subject is not consistent and otherwise—for the previous point of respectability—not respectful of those in the arts and humanities. Nevertheless, the arts and humanities offer: creativity, events to review, and education dollars spent on the faculties are thriving instead of the “wasted” term Rebarb uses.
