My program is requesting the sum of $80,000 from CDC for the purpose of buying 1200 thrash containers and 10 waste receptacle skip for areas that are not accessible to waste trucks. And 2 waste compactor truck for the community of Epe. Epe is a local government area of Lagos Nigeria with a population of about 181, 734 according to 2006 national census (National population Census). This is intended as a pilot project for the program Cleaner and Healthier Lagos.
There is an increased concern for public health as a result of inadequate waste management practice in Lagos. This is compounded by the rapid population growth as a result of urbanization. A holistic approach will be used which is reducing waste flow through reduce reuse recycle and disposal (Oteng-Ababio, 2011 p.). The project will also exploits areas that address economic value of this waste in order to generate funds or resources to sustain this project.
This project seeks to increase public awareness on the health implication of improper disposal of waste and open burning as well as encourage behavior change (Oteng-Ababio, 2011 p.558). Moreover, residents will become aware of issues related to solid waste management in their areas and be less reluctant to accept changes in solid waste management system (Adamides, Mitropoulos, Giannikos & Mitropoulos, 2009, p.764). This will be achieved through campaigns and mass media. There will be public awareness campaign in schools and market places, local tv and radio channels in three languages English, Yoruba and pidgin or broken English to drive the message to the grassroots. Again, it will use existing community leadership structure like landlord associations, youth leaders, chiefs and kings to reach the grass …show more content…

Local government council ensure that waste is managed well within the areas of their jurisdiction will have to provide enabling environment with appropriate legal framework (Adamides, Mitropoulos, Giannikos & Mitropoulos,2009).
Landlord association and community leaders will organize independent neighborhood environmental monitoring group watch to keep an eye on indiscriminate dumping. Also, landlords will ensure tenant comply with sanitary laws.
The media will help to expand audience reach, mass media, in the form of the radio and television, are effective way to disseminate information and persuade the community to adopt new behaviors. As a partner local tv and radio stations reduce cost of air time for advertisement and campaign messages
Corporate organization will provide financial support.
Entrepreneurs provide market from recovered products from waste.
