Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow, Russia on December 16, 1866. He grew up in the Odessa, Russia. Growing up he was able to enjoy music and learned to play the piano and the cello. He also took art lessons, where his love for colors began. Both music and colors would have a impact on his art later in life.
Kandinsky went to college and became a law teacher in order to fulfill his parents wishes. When he was thirty, he decided to change careers and become a full time artist. He attended art school in Munich, Germany. At this point in his life, his art was influenced by painters like Claude Monet as well as music composers and philosophers.

He found that he could place tiny dots of different colors next to each other on the canvas and the eye would mix the colors. He called this way of painting Divisionism.("Art and Artists.") Today, it is known as Pointillism. Seurat thought that this new way of painting would make the colors appear better to the viewer.
In 1884, Seurat began to work on a new masterpiece. He would use pointillism to paint a huge painting called Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. This painting would be 6 feet 10 inches tall by 10 feet 1 inches wide, but would only be painted with small dots. The painting was so complex that it took him two years of nonstop work to finish it.("Art History and Artists."
