Washington Park: A Short Story

Improved Essays
It was eight o’clock and the park was on lock. From the top of Washington Park to the bottom, Posters with R.I.P. Jay had been posted on every telegram pole. Three massive barbecue grills were smoking and had the whole park smelling like hardwood hickory smoke blended with weed. Thomasina, her brother David, and Larry, were doing the grilling. The deejay had a compilation of hip-hop songs from every era. Little kids were standing under the gazebo doing all of the latest dances or bouncing around in moonwalks. The younger adults were sprawled about the park making small talk, listening to music from the trunks of their rides, smoking blunts the size of tree trunks and sipping on either Tequilla, Cognac, or Lean. “It’s dope.”
“That is Bam’s brother car,” she replied to Kim. “He was standing under the tree.
“Biish stop lying.” She blurted into a fist over a fist, covering her gap teeth. She was embarrassed of it.
Quay was standing underneath a large oak tree near the Eldorado. Dino stood to his right, and Yogi was sitting to his left in a folding chair. Shea, Kush, Queen, and Choppa was chained to a bicycle stand nearby. They had been barking at any stranger passing by. Bam had moved from leaning against the front end, to taking a seat in the driver’s seat of his Eldorado. He raised the volume on his sound system causing his two ten-inch subwoofers to beat viciously.

“Those some chicks she went to school wit’ over at George. That’s out there where Demetrius live at.” Bam answered.
Quay saw Kim snap a picture of his car with a disposable Kodak Camera. “I’m fixing to holla at her. I’ll be back.” He walked over to investigate. Dino followed. Yogi stayed behind snorting sneakily and waiting for Vickie to pull up with some extra blunts and McDonald’s. He had sent her away, to free himself. He was feeling smothered. “Bruh, Man this girl ‘bout to drive me

What the fuck y’all looking at?” Dino shouted in agreement with Nessa who had taken hold of him. He watched as everyone resumed.
Quay was still slightly riled up.
“My bad Bruh I didn’t mean to say that shit.” Dino said to Quay going over to him. “I’m high bruh.” He reached out to dap Quay. Quay hesitated for a moment and then followed through with him.
“Apologize to the lady, Bruh.” Quay told his homie with seriousness in his eyes.
“My bad Lil Buddy. I shouldn’t have done ya like that.”
“It’s cool.” Renee replied. “I was wrong too.”
Dino walked over and sat in the folded chair that Yogi had been sitting in to chat with Bam. Quay took Kim’s number and went to post up under the tree again.
“You and your mouth,” Brittney said to her sister shaking her head.
“Y’all come on! If something else pop off, I be damned if y’all get stuck in the middle of it. Over my dead body!” Nessa fumed. They followed, pathetically, and knew that she had it in her to snap. They had seen her in action at the graduation, so they readily
